One of the groups I play in has this programmed for next spring. Has anyone here played it? I'll be playing both Eb and bass (my assumption anyway as I usually cover the utility stuff), so I'm trying to figure which parts need to be covered where in the outer movements (each is tacet for one of the inner movements, so that decision becomes easy). Once I listen to it, maybe I'll have a better idea of what is doubled where across the orchestra.
Words of wisdom for playing this piece?

It's massive, and it's awesome. Rarely performed in the USA, so you are very fortunate. The Cleveland Orchestra did it here about a decade ago, and it was overwhelming--the audience absolutely blown away. Congrats--and enjoy!

E-flat part is not all that important, so you might want to stick with bass, which does have some exposed spots.
IIRC, the e-flat part goes up to high A in spots.
Maybe it's just because I'm in the northeast, but I have had the opportunity to play this many times - the first being when I was a junior in high school with the all-US orchestra that American Airlines sponsored in the 70's and the last a few years ago.

I've played it once, surprisingly Vaughan Williams' Sumphonies are not that often done here in the UK. The composer says himself that the Eb can be left out along with some others instruments but really you should do it with the full forces. The Eb adds that shine alongside the piccolo especially in the third movement.
Have fun either way as it's amazing music.
