Is there a play along CD or other video that shows me how the lessons sound in Hite's Melodious and Progressive Studies? I want to make sure that what I'm playing is what is written. Thank you.

I think what you are referring are also known as the C. Rose 40 and 32 Etudes (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There should be a bunch of YOUTUBE renderings of these out there.

Van Cott (a regular advertisor on this list--see the right side panel under "Music & Books"), in his wide range of clarinet music, carries a CD recording of the Rose 32 by French clarinetist Phillip Cuper that comes with Cuper's edition of the 32. Cuper performs the etudes elegantly with a very spare and attractive piano accompaniment. He makes music out of them. Highly recommended!

Are the Rose Etudes the same as the Demnitz etudes in Hite's book?

I don't know if those are the Rose studies or not. My copy of Hite's Rose Studies is titled that way on the cover. Hite published a whole series of study books, and the one you ask about may be a part of that. If that's the case, you probably won't find recordings unless they were distributed as companions to the books.

If they are Hite's editions of Rose studies, be aware as you listen to YouTube recordings that one of the things Hite did was to go back to the original violin studies Rose used and restore the music that Rose cut out or changed to make the studies more clarinet-friendly. So, if that book contains the same material as my Hite/Rose edition, you will see music on the page that you don't hear in the recordings. I actually prefer the originals (via Hite or even in the original violin editions) over the Rose versions, but you should know what you're looking at and listening to.

The Demnitz études are not the same as the Rose. I think the Demnitz are more or less written by Demnitz, while the Rose are picked out from the violin repertory and adapted for clarinet. The Demnitz are better for beginner students, or to practice in transposition for more advanced students, but have less musical content.

Melodious and Progressive comes in 2 volumes.

These are not the Rose etudes, which is in the 'Artistic Studies from the French School' volume.

It would be best to get a good private teacher to help you through them.

Where they the Rose studies, I've always appreciated the time that Kathy Williams-Devries took to record them on Youtube.

Sure--she's not perfect (who is.) But if a newcomer wants to hear how, pretty much, an etude should sound, she's your go to gal.

IMHO: critics of same should consider posting their performance of corrections[wink]
