 Short bass clarinet pieces
Author: Curinfinwe

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a piece for bass clarinet for an audition that fits the following criteria:

-Between 2-3 minutes (doesn't have to be exactly that, just quite short)
-Not contemporary- preferably melodic. Jazz or klezmer inspired are fine
-Not extremely technically challenging.
-Accessible and likeable for a non-woodwind player

I've been looking through my school library but almost everything that short is contemporary. I'm open to transcriptions too!

Any suggestions you have are extremely welcome.

Thank!

Bozza-- Sonatine, I think? Melodic, not difficult. Short.

First movement of Hindemith Clarinet Sonata? Granted it was written for soprano clarinet, but it sits very well on the bass, it's easy, and it sounds pretty good if your accompanist is a capable pianist (unfortunately mine wasn't when I played the piece for high school solo festival 40 years ago).

I've done the Hindemith Sonata on Bass Clarinet and it sounds awesome. I'd go for that if I were you.

Hi Anna,

Have you looked into the Bach Cello Suites? The Bourrée of the Third Suite should fit your bill, though it approaches the 5 minute mark.

There's also the Bozza Ballade or the first movement of the Hindemith Bassoon Sonata (if you can find a transcription of it).

Hi Seok Hee!
I have thought about all of those, but it is going to be unaccompanied so the Bozza or Hindemith probably aren't ideal.
The Bach would be fine, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. I want to find something a bit different and more attention-grabbing if I can.

In that case, how about Wilson Osborne's Rhapsody for Bassoon? It's a transcription for clarinet done by the composer and it's 5 minutes long. Works much better on bass than on soprano.

Check out Voltage Suite by Pierre Max duBois -- almost any movement. (I ignore the slap-tongue indications)

How about "Introduction and Joropo" by Jorge Montilla?

It's quite showy and covers a 4 octave range, but isn't impossibly difficult.

There are some recordings of it on youtube, so you can check it out.

Bass clarinet jazz I intentionally suggest some standard jazz, aren't so hard (expect Body And Soul and Lush Life and some other piecese for the armony inside is very hard and frustating...). Some of very easy (I don't want you get a some hard piece) Is summertime, have some II-V-I They become very helpful... Or if you want you can get some ear trascription... there's a Bass clarinettist jazzist and is Buddy Defranco, and one the most bass clarinettist i love is Eric Dolphy and Bob mintzer (and Marcus Miller, of course).

This piece is blues in D Flat but for B flat instrument is E flat, isn't hard, if you want to use ear and trascript (the first part) and the second is in A or B for b flat instrment

About klezmer i know Giora Feidman, he made a very incredible klezmer piece...
In some case Corrado Giuffredi play bass clarinet with Giora but is rare and he plays a lot of classical pieces...

Kal Opperman's Un Seul for solo clarinet works very well on bass clarinet. Short, very lyrical, a beautiful piece, inexpensive. There are a couple of performances on YouTube.

Best regards,
jnk
