Bass Clarinet Setup w/ Legere Reed
Author: bassclgirl92

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a #3 Legere Signature reed. I'm not quite sold on it yet, but maybe that's because of my setup. I have a Clark W Fobes Nova, which is a close-faced mouthpiece with a 1.70 tip opening, and a Vandoren Optimum ligature. The sound seems a little fuzzy, and I get the impression the reed isn't quite right for the mouthpiece.

What I'd like to know is:

-Is there a certain mouthpiece tip/facing that works better with legere reeds?
-is the Optimum adequate, or do legeres respond better with a Rovner?
-Anyone have a setup that works? And if so, what?

I've heard the Lawrie Bloom by Grabner is a good piece for Legere reeds, but I don't quite have the money for that.

Thanks!

I got wonderful results in the lower register and in the low clarion with a Legere Signature #3 and a B50 which is considerably more open than your mouthpiece. I found the Legere didn't respond very well in the upper clarion and altissimo and went back to cane.

Maybe try a harder Legere if my 2.10 mouthpiece played great with a #3? The issues I had with the upper register didn't have to do with the strength of the reed, I don't think.

I've had success with the Fobes Debut and Legere reeds. I use a 3¼ on soprano so I tried that first. I thought it was a bit stuffy, went down to a 2¾ and that works very well. While I've heard of "Legere-friendly" mouthpieces — yes, Grabners — I've never heard of "Legere-friendly" ligatures. Try a shoelace and see if it responds any better, just for science.

I've been using a combination of cane and Legere standard bass clarinet reeds for a number of years. I recently decided to use synthetics only and bought a Legere Signature. My normal set-up is a Brad Behn mouthpiece with a 2.5 Legere bass reed so I bought a 2.75 (they don't make a bass reed beyond 3.0).

I found it to be very soft, much more like a 2.25 standard reed, with very little projection or articulation, almost 'flabby'. Before contacting Legere I tried contacting a number of Legere artists all of whom list the bass clarinet in their bios; none responded.

I contacted Legere directly and they were quick to accommodate. I decided it wasn't worth trying a 3.0 bass reed so Legere sent me two standard bass reeds of whatever strength I preferred. Top marks to Legere for quickly resolving this to my satisfaction!

Since then I've read a few comments of people who like the bass Signature reed and I use and prefer the soprano Signature reed, but the bass simply didn't work for me.

Cheers.

I haven't tried a Bass clarinet Signature yet. I use a standard 2.75 on a Nova.
