Has anybody else been getting spam pop-up messages upon logging into the forums? I'll try to enter the BBoard, then suddenly the forums will go blank and I'll be taken to a pop-up telling me to upgrade my browser. Unless I quit out of my internet browser, I'm forced to load what appears to be a scam website, which gives you the typical "Are you sure you don't want to upgrade?" message upon leaving. Not the worst of spam, but still annoying nonetheless.

You've probably picked up some malware from somewhere that you've visited. Run your anti-malware software if you have it, if not look at something like Spyhunter. Anti-virus software won't pick these up as they're quite legitimate programs, just unwanted.

I imagine that if I had picked up malware it would be affecting me on multiple websites, but I have only had this issue on the clarinet BBoard. I'm also on a Mac, which has fairly good security and has never had issues with malware before. I will look into it though.

Curious. I don't get anything like what you describe. Macs are pretty good, but they're by no means bulletproof.

The Clarinet BBoard is one of the better behaved sites. There are a number of sites where I turn off JavaScript before entering, due to the site's boorish behavior. I have never had a problem with popups here.

My mac has no problem. Curious that it is just for one web site. Make sure you have the latest version of the browser you are using.

In general the ads come from the Google ad banner, combined with cookies from previously visited sites. Google doesn't normally allow this kind of scareware; you might want to notify them.

If you Google "softwareupdaterlp.com virus" you will find a lot of information, most of which seems to be screaming - 'don't run it'.
I would never run any unknown software on my machine that just popped up. Always do a search to see what other folks think of it.
Google "Malwarebytes for mac" to see a highly recommended free program for removing bad things from computers. I have a windows computer, but it apparently also is available for Macs.

Since I've been using this site since 1998, I may have forgotten things, but I can't remember ever seeing a pop-up here. (Windows with IE9. I've opted out of everything opt-outable.) On this bulletin board and all other sites I use, I do occasionally get an auto-warning (a small box at the bottom of the page) from Microsoft's free security program saying that an ad from an unsecured site wants to run, and asking whether I want to run it, but all I have to do to say "No" is to close that box.
This is the most trouble-free site I've ever used and I thank you again, Mark, for keeping it in such good order.
