 Best protective clarinet case
Author: Audipi314

About 3 years ago I purchased a new Bb clarinet that came along with a hardshell case that contained it and a thin outer case that contained that duo. (these both just came along with the purchase of the instrument). But recently, though my hardcover case has been working great, the outer case is just completely falling apart(Handles pulling apart, case being scratched, torn, and bruised from constant use and travel....) Enough so that I need a new case for my clarinet. Whether or not that means I get an entirely new case or just a new, heavy-duty outer case. I know next to nothing about clarinet cases and quality, but I was hoping not to spend more than $80-$90 dollars on it. I know wiseman cases are wonderful, but they're very expensive, and I've also heard much controversy about protec and BAM cases. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (Keep in mind this is for a single clarinet, and I plan to use this case through the rest of my highschool and college musical career-as a student.)

Try Pelican Cases, or look at these recent threads for more ideas.

The only controversy over BAM may be lack of storage for "stuff" and perhaps that they don't stay propped open so well on your lap as you are putting your horn together. Other than that they are the MOST protective cases around. I had both the single case (that carries vertically) and the double case that is pretty standard looking. Both have this incredible high tech foam insulation that I believe would keep things in top condition even if they tumbled down a flight of stairs.

The double case was around $300 back in the 90s so it may be pretty expensive. The single case is cheaper but probably more than $90 US Dollars.

I recommend either ProTec or Gator cases for high school students.

If the case is good, you just need a case cover

See, e.g.,

http://www.wwbw.com/Clarinet-Cases---Gig-Bags-Cases---Gig-Bags-for-Woodwinds.wwbw

http://www.wwbw.com/Protec-Clarinet-Case-Cover-541058-1151511.wwbw $30

https://www.altieribags.com/ww_clarinet.html

http://shop.weinermusic.com/ALTIERI-BACKPACK-SINGLE-Bb-CLAINET_-OBOE-CASE-COVER-MODEL-20S/productinfo/CA1B00/ $98

Do google searches on clarinet gig bag, clarinet case cover, etc.

You may want to get something like

http://www.landsend.com/pp/StylePage-439917_AF.html?CM_MERCH=REC-_-LIPP-_-GGT-_-1-_-439917-_-439917

to use as an outer case. It will be really durable and carry lots of stuff.

While I do not understand the necessity of protecting the outside of an instrument case, I do use a heavy cloth bag I got years ago at a conference to carry my clarinet (in a case), music, and anything else that fits in it. A beach bag might serve the same purpose.

Alternatively, check out bags for laptop computers, which are available at Best Buy, WalMart and many other places.

A lot of the above cases are good ideas but just keep in mind that you do not want a soft cover case, those will get ruined in wet weather and will stink. They too do not stay propped open. SO frustrating :)

For covers the Altieris are the "standard," but I must say I like the "Landsend" one suggested above. The only difference may be some insulation to keep the temperature more stable in the Altieri.
