Auguste Buffets precede Buffet and Buffet-Crampon. Thus they're all *very* old. No matter how this one played when new, I doubt that it would play well today.
I've tried several over the years, and none of them have been up to modern requirements.

Ken, I believe the ones you are thinking of say Auguste Buffet jeune and these plain old Auguste Buffets are from a later era from my understanding. I don't how exactly they are related, but I don't believe they are anything special. The juene instruments are rare and collectible.
Edit: The aforementioned Louis-Auguste Buffet jeune, co-developer of the Boehm system clarinet, son of an instrument maker himself,had two sons. One formed Buffet Crampon, and the other , with the same name as his father, was also involved in instrument making. He lived later into the 19th century, so maybe these had something to do with him.

My old Langwill indicates that Auguste Buffet started initially as Buffet jeune in 1831 and seems to have existed until 1885 though I am sure I have in past seen a few Auguste Buffets that looked rather more modern than that date suggests.

Ah, yes I had it wrong in my mind- looked it up and now it makes more sense. Denis Buffet -Auger and Louis-Auguste Buffet were brothers. Denis started the instrument dynasty. His son Jean-Louis Buffet established Buffet Crampon. Auguste Buffet jeune developed the Boehm clarinet and apparently his son with the same may have continued his business for a time, but ultimately the Buffet still in business is the other one.

Per New Langwill Auguste Buffet was in business in Paris from 1919 - 1925 which would be apparently consistent with the horn in the pictures. The factory was at La Couture. No relationship to other Buffets is given.

Whenever I see an instrument manufactured in France- especially between 1915 and 1945, I think about what was going on there at the time. And I wonder about the craftsmen and the factories- were they able to concentrate on their work? Was it a good diversion from whatever was going on in the street outside or at home?
The Leblanc Dynamic 2 I had for a while was made around 1957 or 1960. I think those were better years, but there was still plenty of turmoil at least for some folks. And not just in France. And it continues today... that's life.
