 Backun Protege'

I traded in my Yamaha 650 and purchased a Backun Protégé in Cocobolo w/nickel keys.
This clarinet is by far the free-ist blowing, easiest playing, (even in the higher registers) clarinet I have
ever owned ! Its gorgeous to look at, makes me sound far richer than I ever have before...only one complaint:
there is an adjustable thumb rest with attached ring for a neckpiece. This thumb rest is very wide and
it digs into my thumb. Being it is extra wide, there are no thumb rest covers to fit over this, so Ive just had to 'deal
with it'. Other than that, this is my dream clarinet and Im glad I found it ! No popping keys, - very quiet movement.
*My Yammy has always given me problems that seem to reoccur over & over with no permanent solution..i was very unhappy
so it was time to change. *Am using M13-Lyre Bb Clarinet Mouthpiece Profile 88, 3.5 Zonda reeds & Drs Stealth Power Barrel (sometimes
I switch to a B45 mouthpiece

This clarinet is a red color, very deep mahogany hue

But I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT and can recommend it to everyone looking for a
beautiful looking, great sounding, easy playing 'step up' clarinet !

You could have a tech install any number of different thumb rests so this is not a serious issue. Also, you could try medical tubing (comes in different diameters). Just slip over the thumb rest and cut off the access. I also prefer to turn it inside out so the tackier side is outward.

What were the problems you were having with your Yamaha?

You can also glue a piece of cork to the bottom side of the thumb rest.

How is its intonation?

Intonation: Fantastic! Everything about this clarinet is great..I played in a quartet
on New Years Day and had several people tell me how wonderful my clarinet sounds!
~someone reached out to touch it and I almost died !! She mustve realized at the last
minute what she was doing and pulled back..haha..
The sound is more mellow than bright (imo)..projection in church, concert hall and
bandshell were all good w/o loss of tone when playing soft/loud. Changing the barrel
from the one that came with it, brightened up the sound a bit and was a necessary
thing for the type of playing I am usually involved with, and the standard issue is
more for a 'chamber music' type sound. Clarinet was purchased from Weiner Music
in New York and it took approx. 2 mos to receive as it sat in customs in Canada for
quite some time. It came with a black soft case, no cleaning cloth, no cork grease, no
booklet. nothing but the case. I did NOT try this clarinet first & went solely on what I
saw/heard online (youtube/backun website). I loved the look, loved the sound, and it
was comparable to the price I paid for my Yammy, so I took a big chance. *I had tried
probably a dozen different clarinets and just couldn't find that right fit

This was the best purchase for me. I've owned several Yammys, and a Buffet Evette, and
and this is the one Ive been waiting for. period.

Hello Betty,

I am very pleased to hear that you are enjoying your Protege Clarinet. We have been getting wonderful comments and feedback from many players. Sorry that you did not get your swab or cork grease. We always supply those items but they must have been left out when the dealer shipped your instrument. (by mistake)

I would like to make sure that you do get them. Please Email me privately morrie@backunmusical.com with your contact information and I will make sure they get sent to you.

Everyone seems to have their own taste for thumb rests....some like raw metal, some cork, some felt and others rubber or tubing. I believe the commercially available large one suggested by Bruno should fit. (thanks for that Bruno) If you do need a thumb rest with cork or felt, just let me know.

Best wishes for 2014 and thanks for your support.

Morrie
