 Suggested Clarinet Pieces

What are some of your favorite classical pieces to play on Bb clarinet? I am relatively new to classical music and I am looking for good pieces that feature clarinet to play and listen to. I am not really into contemporary or atonal stuff which is a lot of what I have come across while searching for music on the internet. Also, when I say classical I mean baroque, classical, romantic and anything else that would fall under the term classical music.
Thanks

Dylan

I don't know if you're specifically looking for recital pieces or if you just want to play classical music on the clarinet. If it's the latter, this story might be of interest. This past summer I got to meet a well known Afro-Cuban saxophonist and composer who was doing a residency at the school where I work. We were talking about woodwinds and he said that he really wanted to learn the bass clarinet and that he was familiar with clarinet fingerings but had never really played the instrument very well. I gave him a few tips on where to find good information (Ed Palanker's bass clarinet pages) and strongly suggested he try playing Bach pieces transcribed for clarinet — there are several good books out there. ( Van Cott is a good source.) He looked at me and said, "That's just what Don Byron told me."

If you google "high school clarinet solo list" you'll find some really good pieces that have been used in competitions for the past several decades. I know that in Idaho, there is a list of solos that is considered "standard" for the clarinet repertoire. Perhaps other states have this as well. My teacher had me go to youtube and listen to performances of different ones on the list that she gave me, then had me choose which one or two I'd like to work on. This way I was able to choose what really appealed to me and I've enjoyed learning them very much.

Fantasy from the Opera Der Freischutz von Weber arr. Simeon Bellison. I use it regularly as an encore selection.

Master lots of older music that will greatly improve your phrasing and technique patterns. Do a google search for free clarinet music and a few sites will pop up. One based in Los Angeles is especially complete and fun to browse. For high school, theme and variations pieces from the late 19th century are fun to play and a great teaching tool.

And -- don't forget your traditional clarinet methods and standard concerto and sonata repertoire.

Have fun.

And make sure you are completely satisfied with your mouthpiece and reed setup.

Try the"Hommages" by the great Hungarian clarinetist / composer Bela Kovacs. Challenging, even for accomplished players, but musically rich and very rewarding to perform and to listen to. Also fun to practice.

You can purchase all of them in a compilation from Vandoren in Paris (published by "Editions Darok"). You can also purchase a CD of Bela Kovacs performing the complete set of Hommages himself (available last time I checked from "Rose" in Budapest: http://www.rose.hu/html/index.html).

If you've never heard Bela Kovacs play before, you'll be amazed. He's now retired but still teaches, I believe.

Good luck.
