I've come across strange metronome markings in a Kaspar Kummer trio (ca. 1820), on imslp.org, here: http://bit.ly/ZJ0Cx5 Can anyone elucidate? For example: Allegro (quarter note = 8) Similarly "Andante grazioso (in 6/8) (eighth note = 10)
How are these numbers to be calculated in bpm or MM?

That's bizarre. Maybe it has something to do with the phrasing rather than a tempo marking, which is given in the words (Allegro, etc.).

Beats per minute and MM (Maelzel's Metronome) are the same thing. The flute part has Rh. Pend. after the numbers. It may be some other kind of tempo measuring instrument, maybe with a hanging pendulum and numbered spots for a sliding weight? that either predated or competed with Maelzel's instrument. I spot checked some of the other Kummer scores at IMSLP and there weren't numerical tempo markings on any others I opened.

The duration of the note is equal to the duration of one vibration (swing) of a string pendulum whose length is equal to n Rhenish inches, where n is the number stated in the tempo marking. Google "rhenish inch pendulum" without the quotes. You will find links to Godfrey Weber's "General Music Teacher."
I'd never heard of this before either but, after looking at the flute part whidh indicated Rh. pend., I used Google and eventually arrived at the above reference.
