 New Vandoren White/Black Master reed
Author: Micke Isotalo 2017

Has anyone yet tried the "new version" of Vandoren White Master reeds? It seems that from now on the "old" version is called "Traditional" and the new one just "White Master" (the same applies to the Black Master reeds). See http://www.vandoren.fr/fr/PDF%20anche%20allemande/Anches%20de%20clarinette%20Allemandes%20en.pdf

What's your opinion, if you have tried these new White or Black Master reeds? Are the strength's equivalent compared to the old ones? What's your choice of mouthpiece, ligature and instrument - together with these new reeds?

Hmmmmm.

That's interesting, because the "White Master" was designed in conjunction with help from Karl Leister who actually used them (at least for a while). So who's more German than Karl?

I haven't used them i have only used the black masters. i havent used them extensively lately because i just got a new mouthpiece and new barrel but i do use them every now and then. While they are "German" i do use them haha. Right now my choice of mouthpiece/ligature/instrument set up is a Greg smith kaspar cicero, vandoren optimum ligature (with the 2 verticle line insert) and a Buffet R13 silver plated keys

The base of the scrape is flatter on the new ones, that's the only obvious difference that can be seen in the literature.

Dear Jason,

Very Funny. Your original quotes go down better with the accompaniment of Walton's music.

I haven't seen those around. I do have a new set with "BM" engraved on the back of the reed.

Is that the new BMs?

Elifix: Compare your package with the pictures here: http://www.vandoren.fr/fr/PDF%20anche%20allemande/Anches%20de%20clarinette%20Allemandes%20en.pdf

The design of the package seems renewed, with big WM/BM letters on it. If your package has these letters, and the engraving on the back of the reeds lacks the word "Traditional", then they should be of the new version.

The information on Vandorens site seems to be from Sept 2012, so it's possible that many retailers still have just the old ones in stock.

Ah, I see.. Thanks!!

Yeah I got a couple of those boxes. Hmm, I dunno about the dimensions different but they feel a lot harder than the old-styled boxes... At least when I opened 4 boxes.. Lol.

They are even harder than one old-style 5+ and 5 box I have!

I am thinking of making the arduous switch back to Oehler again and the prospect of a stiffer Vandoren German reed sounds quite appealing considering that REAL German reeds have always come in strengths up to 7 1/2.

Although the printed literature to which Chris points us almost seems to say the opposite in its reference to "open" mouthpieces. I guess I'll just have to wait until I have my Gerolds...........wink, wink !

Elifix: What's the "written" strength on your new BM reeds? Is it also 5?

I haven't tried the new version of White Masters yet, but will the company keep on making the old version? Although none of my clarinets are Oehler system, I buy White Master and Black Master reeds for use on antique and vintage mouthpieces with dimensions similar to those of the modern mouthpieces made for German system instruments. White Master and Black Master have saved me a lot of reed-whittling drudgery!

They still make 'em. It's marked on the box as "Traditional"

Thanks -- I hope they do keep on making both versions. Great to have the options!

I stand corrected.

I meant, 'up to strength 8.'

I actually just attended a Julian Bliss master class. He explained that the Rico company will actually produce custom strengths out of the ordinary such as 7 1/2, 8 and even 9 reeds. It's crazy!

Oh, it makes perfectly good sense now that so many alligators and other crocodilians are learning to sit up and play the clarinet. (Now if we could only persuade mouthpiece makers to provide, "Guaranteed BitePruf Steel, the only mouthpiece a jammin' caiman will ever need!")
