Richard Strauss used C clarinets rather than E flat ones in his later works. Any comments? thanks in advance.

Strauss was one of the most tonally aware of all composers when it came to clarinets.
He clearly knew what he wanted and chose the appropriate clarinet to match the sound he wanted.

Not entirely sure of his choice of clarinets in the oboe concerto and "Four Last Songs" - maybe he did that to suit German/Oehler systems under guidance from prominent German clarinettists of the time.

While he scored for D clarinet in perhaps its most famous role in "Till Eulenspiegel", it's much easier played on an Eb (and there are transposed parts for Eb out there for it - you'll have to look for them).

The opinions I express are my own.

I'm not an expert about this subject, but there's the amusing story of the four saxophone parts in Strauss' Symphonia Domestica. The symphony calls for a C soprano, F alto, F baritone, and C bass. According to the story I once heard, Strauss really planned to include saxhorns, but misnamed the instrument in his score! He was startled to see four saxophone players sitting in the orchestra when he arrived for the first rehearsal, but he allowed them to stay. For those who have performed this, are the saxophones still included today? I remember reading once that Strauss decided the saxophone parts were optional.
