Bought $72 clarinet. Is it an R13?
Author: Jmichael11

Brand : Buffet Crampon
Instrument : N 2 DN Sib 440 France
Serial number : 59852
Year of manufacturing : 27/02/1959

Found the instrument on Etsy and judging by the nice condition, decided to purchase it. Using the serial number from the online image, I went to the Buffet Crampon website and have no idea how to interpret what it spit out. I know the Sib means Bb and 440 is the pitch, but what does the rest mean? Could it be an R13? If not, what is it?

Two things to check are the number of posts for the throat A and G# keys and whether the wood is cut out underneath the bell keys. If there are 4 posts for the throat keys and a cutout under the bell keys then you probably have an R13.

Here are a few pictures of the instrument I purchased. I'm told it will be shipped Tuesday.

It's not a Buffet - that's a wooden Selmer USA (Bundy) but appears to have a plastic top joint.

How are you able to tell that, and what about the serial number? If so, how does its performance rank? Any and all information would be helpful in case I should cancel this order.

I currently have a plastic Selmer myself, though I have no idea what exactly it is.

You can tell by the keywork as that's the style made by Selmer USA for Bundys as they have the domed pad cups instead of pointed ones (which Signets have) - your own plastic Selmer USA will have the same style keywork.

The joints appear to be lacquered, so maybe it is all wood, but the uniform appearance of the lacquer gives the top joint a plastic look.

It's definitely not a pro level clarinet nor is it a Buffet, so I'd cancel the order if you would prefer to get a better quality instrument. But fpr $72, it's not a bad buy if you're after an intermediate level wooden clarinet.

But Chris, doesn't the top pad cup on the lower joint on a Bundy turn upwards like a Malerne ?

The entire pad cup arm is angled upwards from the key barrel on the RH rings instead of kicking up at the very end on this one. This is an older style Bundy-type clarinet, probably from the mid '60s to mid '70s.

I agree with Chris. Definately Bundy style key cups.

Except for the latches, the case construction is identical to the Selmer case that came with my 30 year old Selmer bass clarinet.
