 Selmer signature, German facing mouthpiece?
Author: SamuelChan

Hey guys, I would like to know if a German facing mouthpiece can fit onto the Selmer Signature? I saw on many threads that the signature has a more German-like bore? Or is it still rated as a French bore clarinet? Was wondering if a German-facing mouthpiece with a Legere German Reed would sound ok on it.

Signatures and all other Selmers are still French bore clarinets, but there's no harm in experimenting with German mouthpieces on them - bonus if it gives you the sound and playing characteristics you're after.

I'm looking for a darker and warmer tone, but I don't mind the lack of flexibility as what people say for the German bore clarinet/mouthpiece. Which German mouthpiece should I try? I've been seeing either viotto or vandoren, and is in a lack of funds to try many!

A colleague has a Selmer 9, and he plays it with a German style Vandoren mouthpiece and a very hard reed..

I would suggest that you try it and see if it works. But, if it has a different bore and was designed with a german instrument in mind, it may be that you will end up with intonation problems. I might consider looking at a range of French bore mouthpieces first. There are countless mouthpieces out there today.

Maybe pick one of the great makers and get a dialogue going and let them make something for your tastes.

Hello Samuel,

Maybe I can help you. In my Buffet RC I play with a Nagamatsu Vienna model mouthpiece made to fit in a french bore. You can play with this mouthpiece in any french clarinet (Buffet, Selmer, Yamaha, Patricola, etc...).

There are more mouthpiece makers that can make you a mouthpiece with german or vienna facing, to fit in french bore. For example, Viotto, Alexander Willscher, Schwenk & Seggelke, etc. All you have to do is contact with any of them and tell what you want.

You wont have any important intonation problem, only the same problems that when you play the same clarinet with different models of french mouthpieces.
