Does anybody have some good recommendations for a jazz clarinet piece to play on a recital. I know the standards are the Copland Concerto and the Artie Shaw Concerto but to of my college colleagues have played both of them recently. Any other recomendations?

Will they allow you to round up a jazz rhythm section and play standards from the Real/Fake Books?

Here are a couple of suggestions:

Swing High - Sy Oliver
Indian Boogie Woogie - Woody Herman
Begin The Beguine - Cole Porter
Clarinet A La King - Edddie Sauter

Study, Practice, Play and Enjoy.

"Benny's Gig"--a suite of jazz tunes in a variety of styles for clarinet and string bass.

Just a thought, take a chance and be creative--improvise something.

David Baker has at least three works:

Clarinet Sonata (Movements are Blues, Loneliness and Dance)

Heritage: A Tribute to Great Clarinetists for clarinet, violin, piano and bass (Buddy and Beyond, Arite, BBBB, BG)

Aspects of Andy for clarinet, piano, bass and string quartet

The sonata has been published and is in print. I don't know about the other two -- recorded by James Campbell, possibly available from the composer, if not published

Lalo Schifrin: Central Park Variations for clarinet and piano

Jack Delano, Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (Latin jazz flavor from this Puerto Rican composer, should be available from Luyben Music)

Alec Wilder, Sonata

Alec Templeton, Pocket Sized Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2

Best regards,
jnk

Baker's three pieces mentioned: Clarinet Sonata, Heritage: A Tribute to Great Clarinetists and Aspects of Andy are available, along with Hommage a l'Histoire (l'Histoire du Soldat formation), on a single cd on the Gala label.
It is also available for download on iTunes for $9.99.

Gershwin Preludes arranged for Clarinet and piano

Derivations by Morton Gould (originally for clarinet and band is sometimes done with piano, bass and drums)

There are some arrangements published of Gershwin Songs (Summertime...) I think Richard Stoltzman published them in one of his collections.
