 Royal Conservatory Technical Req.

Hello!
From what I've read here, I know there are mixed views on the whole Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus...etc... Just to clarify, this is new to me (RCM) I personally like to use my own ideas and teach from life not a syllabus, but I have a student who is not in band anymore and I feel like this can be a type of goal for him.
I was hoping I could find someone on here who has gone through the exams because I have a few questions especially about the Technical Requirements (scales/arpeggios). In the syllabus they have the articulations required. My main question is that it shows 6 quarter notes for an arpeggio. Isn't there 7 notes in a one octave arpeggio? c-e-g-c-g-e-c. Is that correct or are they thinking of an arpeggio differently?

Any help would be helpful!

Thank you!

Mindy -

Audition Rule # 1: FTFI (Follow The F---- Instructions). If they ask for 6 notes, play 6 notes, not 7. If you play 7, you'll be downgraded.

In a masterclass, Anthony Gigliotti said that it is standard practice to give an auditioner the music for the Beethoven 6th first movement arpeggiated solo and ask for it as written. The music includes the C and B cadence notes before the solo. If you leave them out, you lose.

It would help if you could give us a link to the instructions or send a scan.

Wow! ok well first off, I apologize yes I should have scanned in a sample of the instructions. I do understand that Audition Rule, which is why I'm asking this question. I am attaching the instructions.

Looks like you should play the full arpeggio. Those appear to be articulation examples, not passage durations.

I read the instructions as requiring Do-Mi-La, La-Mi-Do -- for example, C-E-G, G-E-C.

I think you mean Do-Mi-Sol, Sol-Mi-Do. "La" would be "A" in your example.

You are of course right. Sorry about that. I never learned solfeggio beyond the simplest basics, and, as you can see, I sometimes trio up even on those. On the other hand, I silently finger clarinet and hear the intervals, so I don't need it so much.
