Hello everybody
I have got in possession of old mouthpiece in mint condition which is labeled "Artist", Penzel Mueller, Long Island City, N.Y and bellow is a kind of big dot, 1 line up and 1 line down, and would like to ask you guys if you know something about it.
Since the mouthpiece has a very good sound, even though facing is untouched wanted to ask you is it worth to reface it or not.

From what I have read on this topic before, it can be a Chedeville blank. Most of the older American clarinet makers used to be supported with mouthpieces from France. As I see the bore and throat are unmodified. If you like the sound but rarely can fing a good reed for the mouthpiece, a new facing is the solution.

I refaced the P-M "Artist" mouthpiece that came with my recently acquired full-Boehm P-M "Artist Model" clarinet, and the mouthpiece plays very well (as does the clarinet). Whoever made the blank did a good job, though I can't speak for the factory facing as I altered mine considerably.

I have a wonderful Penzel Mueller mouthpiece. Respectfully, I take the opposite position from Alexi. If it is a vintage piece in mint condition that has hasn't been refaced bu tplays very well, why reface it? Examples of unrefaced vintage mouthpieces that sound well are rare, and IMHO, the piece is worth more economically and from a playing perspective the way it is.

I have a similar P-M Artist mouthpiece. I'm pretty sure it's a Woodwind Co. blank. I believe the P-M mouthpieces rumored to be Chedeville blanks are much earlier ones. That being said, the Artist mouthpieces do play pretty well as do many of the vintage Woodwind Co. mouthpieces.
