The finish on most Buffets is an alcohol based dye (very deep purple) and this does wear off to show the natural beauty of the wood underneath.
Buffets also have a scratched finish rather than a bright, shiny polished finish - so unless you remove all the pillars and other metal fittings so you can paper up the joints and then buff them up to a bright shine, then you won't be able to achieve a bright shiny finish as they never had that to begin with.
You can use a dab of bore oil on a cloth to polish the wood with, but that will soon dull down through handling.
