 Mouthpiece for Ivorolon Style B
Author: Grandpa

I bought a Ridenour Ivorolon barrel with an R bore style. The literature states this barrel should be used with a large bore, low pitched mouthpiece. Does anyone know a good mouthpiece match for this barrel? The clarinet itself has a bore size of .577 measured three quarters of an inch into the clarinet at the end the barrel attaches; I don't know if this has any influence on the mouthpiece choice. The other end also measures .577 inch.

This clarinet is for a student

Joh,

You could email Tom Ridenour with your question.

The tradational Chedeville-style mouthpieces should be nice with this barrel. Also some of the Vandoren M pieces in the 13 series (esample: M13). I think I used a similar barrel, and both my Gregory Smith Chedeville style mouthpiece and my Grabner K13 sounded great with it. Tom also sells some nice hand-finished mouthpieces. Check with him.

On that auction web site, I just won a Ridenour Bb Clarinet ZMT36 mouthpiece made from a Zinner blank (what ever kind of blank that is). The barrel is a Ridenour Ivorolon 67 mm with an R bore style. The clarinet is a 1952 model Edgware with a bore of .577. I hope it all work out.

How does one tell the difference between Ivorolon tuning barrels. Mine are unmarked, and I can't reach in far enough to measure their bores with my calipers.

When I receive my R bore style, I will measure it. I emailed the seller yesterday as I have not yet received it, and it has been ten days. He was going to see if it was shipped so it may be some days before I receive it.

Thank you.

I've got two 62 mm Lyrique tuning barrels that came with my A clarinet. Maybe later today, I'll try stuffing some modeling clay into them to make a mold that I can then measure.

Here are the measurements I took of the two barrels that came with my Lyrique A clarinet.

Barrel #1 (no commercial marking, but I added a piece of tape to write on):
Length: 62-mm
Upper bore 15.30 mm
Lower bore 14.10-mm
Upper socket depth 17.55-mm
Lower socket depth 19.51-mm

Barrel #2 (no commercial marking, but I added a piece of tape to write on):
Length 62-mm
Upper bore 14.10-mm
Lower bore 14.30-mm
Upper socket depth 17.25-mm
Lower socket depth 19.50-mm

Upper joint upper bore 14.8-mm
Upper joint tenon length 17.95-mm

Interestingly, the bottom sockets of the barrels are about 1.5-mm (0.06-in) longer than the upper joint's upper tenon --leaving a gap in the bore even when the barrel is pushed all the way in.

Similarly, my mouthpiece tenons are about 17-mm long, leaving a similar 1.5-mm gap at the mouthpiece end.

Interestingly,

Bob Phillips
