Hi! I'm new to the board. I will be demonstrating the clarinet to a large group of middle school children. I am wondering if anyone has any good ideas on what I should play? I would like it to be fun and maybe a bit flashy. Thanks!

Depends. Do you want it to be something they will recognise? Do you want it to be something they could aspire to play while still at school or something of an insane difficulty that will just blow their minds?

Golliwog's Cakewalk - Debussy and The Entertainer - Joplin are too fun ones I've played and the kids would probably know the tune. Although their difficulty is pretty low.
If you wanted to demonstrate the beautiful tone of the clarinet you can't go wrong with Mozart's Clarinet Conerto Second Movement.

I've recently used Pink Panther and Super Mario Brothers theme to demo clarinet with a fair bit of success

If you want to go down the road of 'pop' tunes, you could try Hedwig's Theme from Harry Potter?

I think you should show off the instrument's range.
If you don't have something handy like a concerto that exploits the 3+ octave range, play 'em a chromatic scale.
Also, its dynamic range from pppp to fff (maybe).

Yes, the kids always recognize the slinky theme from Sampson and Delilah as a snake theme.
At demos, I've also always played the Rhapsody in Blue cadenza and the Peter and the Wolf cat theme.
With school cutbacks, the demos are less often. However, my granddaughter played the clarinet in Carnegie Hall this week with a school group from Kingsburg, CA.

I think one that would really show off the clarinet and the clarinetist and be known by many of the kids would be Paul Jean Jean's Carnival of Venice... or at least I think most of the kids might recognize it. In any case, it is a great piece and it really shows the clarinet off.
