 foot-tapping in the orchestra
Author: Mark Charette
Date:   2011-01-24 17:49

My apologies boys and girls. In my haste to delete some duplicate posts on that recent thread I ended up deleting the whole thread (connecting to internet via a tethered smart phone, slow, not double-checking before I pressed the button, stupidity, feel really bad ... :^( )

And, to top it off, my backup is too old to re-create it ...

Mea maxima culpa ...

See folks? That's exactly what can happen when one's tapping one's foot instead of concentrating on the arts. [tongue]

The thread about tapping one's foot
has disappeared and gone kaput
Which just goes to show
that whatever you know
can be lost when computers re-boot......

OK, it doesn't rhyme so well. But whaddya want for free? For quality limericks, ya gotta pay extra.

We've seen it close up and first hand,
The standmate who taps in the band.
The sound of his feet,
Confused and off-beat,
If it helps, you're in fantasyland.

The annoying tapping of feet,
Is rarely approaching discreet,
Makes one want to scream,
And then start to dream,
Of installing an ejector seat.

If an orchestra player who can't keep the beat
Keeps tapping and rapping with fidgity feet
Then put Super-Glue
On the sole of each shoe
While he's busy with changing his reed.

I have been in performances where the entire band is tacit for a measure, except for the percussive sound of feet tapping the beat. The sound was not noticeable in the band room with a concrete floor and half the band wearing rubber soled shoes; it was quite noticeable on a wooden stage with the band wearing dress shoes.

I have also sat next to players who counted audibly when they had rests. To me, that behavior is more annoying than foot tapping.

I saw someone in an orchestral rehearsal tapping their feet. I asked if they were prepping for a marching band audition.

Never saw them do it again.

But foot-tapping may not be enough,
So consider, please, some other stuff.
Aye, for keeping the time
Use your body, in mime,
Like head-banging, but not quite so rough.

I have witnessed this in Real Life.
