There are mouthpiece "pouches" available that would store the mouthpiece separately from the ligature and cap. I wouldn't consider the issue problematic enough to change setup (a new, perhaps much different ligature), but I would store it in such a way that this is not an issue.
I personally don't like the idea of leaving a reed on the mouthpiece, even if the ligature is loose and it's a non-performance\playing reed. If the ligature is loose, the reed could shift around and wear on the table. If the ligature is tight, the reed could be a destabilizing factor on the table.
I would rather keep it in make-shift pouch or a commercially made on (vandoren makes some I believe...). I would also try to find a higher quality mouthpiece than a 4C. They are somewhat expensive, but would make life much easier!
