if so, a big YAY for Ricardo.
if not, he has a pretty good gig anyway... lucky us- one way or another we get to hear him play with a stellar orchestra.

As mentioned elsewhere on the bulletin board, Ricardo Morales appeared last night (Oct. 16) with the New York Philharmonic and gave superb performances, particularly in Brahms's Fourth Symphony. His playing in the andante moderato was hard to improve upon.
I don't know if he has been appointed to --and accepted-- the principal's job in New York, but both before and after each piece on the program he appeared jovial, ebulliant and, for lack of a better word, chummy with the woodwind players around him. Maybe that's just how he is. I've never seen him on stage before.
Alan Gilbert had the principal woodwind players stand during the ovation after the symphony, which closed a program that began with a Webern passacaglia and featured the Brahms Violin Concerto, with Pinchas Zukerman. There were no empty seats.

With the rumors of downsizing and pay cuts in Philly I don't think I'd pass up an opportunity to take the NYPO gig.

According to 'clarinet jobs,' Ricardo Morales was offered the position last night, but that he has yet to accept/decline.

He's been offered the position but hasn't decided whether to take it. Remember that he won in Chicago but backed out, so it's not yet a sure thing.

This was posted on the Arts Briefly blog of The New York Times last night, around 5:30. As far as what Pascual Martinez Forteza posted on his Facebook page, it's not over till, you know...
New York Job Offer for Philadelphia Orchestra’s Principal Clarinetist
By DANIEL J. WAKIN
The New York Philharmonic took a step closer to filling a key position this weekend, offering its vacant principal clarinet job to Ricardo Morales, who holds the post at the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Mr. Morales sat in as a guest principal with the Philharmonic last week and was offered the job by the orchestra’s music director, Alan Gilbert, before the performance on Saturday night, the Philharmonic spokesman Eric Latsky said on Sunday. Mr. Latzky said he had no immediate word on whether Mr. Morales would accept the position, adding that finishing any contract would be put on hold while the orchestra is on tour in Europe.
The players leave this week and do not play in New York until Nov. 10. The job has been vacant since the end of the 2008-9 season. Mr. Morales could not immediately be reached, and his cellphone was not taking messages. Mr. Morales is also an alumnus of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

A Facebook page, no matter whose Facebook page it is, is hardly a reliable source. It's great gossip, though.

You got me!
But I guarantee that if the NYPO offered the job to Paris Hilton, the Post would have it first.

Whoa........You mean Ricardo M. gets to be on the same page as Mel Gibson (A cameo comeback role) and Terrell Owens (using a matchmaker service)?
http://www.nypost.com/pagesix
Sweet.....But then again, RM was already featured as a write in candidate for President (remember the signs on Phila. buses?).
But isn't RM's wife in the Phil Orch? Makes for interesting commute.
OK, enuff. I have jet lag from trip back from Cairo/Abu Simbel. Considering making the world's first Alabaster clarinet barrel.

Folks, you heard it here first.
Principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra Signs with Miami Heat
Morales leaves to join All-Star lineup of James, Bosch, Wade
AP- (Philadelphia) - Oct18: The Philadelphia Orchestra today announced that Riccardo Morales, principal clarinet since 2001, has signed a free agent contract with the Miami Heat of the NBA and will join the team after the current exhibition season.
Terms of the contract were not made available to the media. Morales joins the starting dream line up that includes LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosch. The Heat is rumored to also be close to signing Carmello Anthony but according to his agent, the signing of Morales may influence Anthony's decision.
"It was a very hard decision to leave Philadelphia for Miami but the opportunity to play with LeBron, Dwayne and Chris was just impossible to pass up. I'm looking forward to hanging out on South Beach and enjoying the great mojitos during my clarinet practice breaks." said Morales shortly after signing his multi-year deal that includes a sponsorship agreement with Nike Reeds. "Philadelphia has been very good to me. The fans there were great. But once Allen Iverson left, things just started going downhill."
Morales' agent David Falk said that his client's contract will include a provision for playing concertos during several half times of home games. "He wants to be treated like a superstar and management agreed with the conditions we put forth."
Rumors including articles published in the New York Times this past week claimed that Morales was close to signing with the New York Philharmonic but those rumors remain unsubstantiated.
Calls to Morales' private residence and the executive directors of both the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra were not returned.

Very interesting, Dileep! Do you think the Philadelphia Orchestra will try to work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Miami Heat? And while we're at it--does anyone know if horn player Bobby Corno was ever sold to another orchestra?

1. The name of the clarinetist is Pascual Martinez-Forteza.
2. Yes, weberfan, you can think I'm a big gossip fan, but calling a member of the NY Phil a gossip guy just because he was the first who tell us the thing doesnt' speak very good about you.
3. What's the difference between Pascual M-F and "clarinet jobs"? Yeah, for sure Pascual has less authority to speak about a concert he was playing in... you guys have a very interesting way to make judgments...

When the principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra (name eludes me right now) switched to the Philharmonic many years ago, he kept his home and large family in the Philly "Main Line" suburbs. Even so he claimed that he had more family time and better life style than if he had stayed with the Philadelphia Orch. ! I don't know if the culture (and schedule) in the PO has improved over the years, but there are other factors beside money and music that can motivate a player to choose his venue.

Lorne Monroe in the 1960s. A great deal has changed for both orchestras since then.

Fantasmacantos...
For the record, I wasn't criticizing you.
I was responding specifically to David Blumberg's post in which he said "Newspaper is ignorant compared to a section member."
My response--a purely friendly one-- was simply to suggest that Pascual Martinez-Forteza's Facebook posting was tantalizing and well-worth considering, given his place in the NYPO. But in terms of hard, cold fact...and particularly in reliable newspaper reporting...it was nothing more than a piece of unattributed information that had yet to be confirmed.
In fact, I'm glad you started this thread. I would not have known about the Facebook remarks if you hadn't.

What an astonishing performer.
I remember back in the late 80's/early 90's, one of my colleagues and I were taking an audition for principal clarinet with the Florida Symphony Orchestra (Orlando, now defunct.)
My friend had auditioned prior to me, and told me that someone on the committee had described the audition of some "kid" that was nothing short of awe inspiring. He had nailed the articulated solo in the last movement of the Beethoven 4th, at which point they had had him increase the tempo several times, till it was quite beyond what the actual performance tempo would ever be, and he was flawless every time. At this point, they asked him to play it pianissimo at this supersonic pace, which he proceeded to do easily. After each rendition, the young man giggled, as if this were all the easiest thing in the world.
Needless to say, my friend and I did not win the position, and 17-year-old Ricardo Morales was on his way.
I have watched his career unfold over the years and I salute this master of the instrument in his ongoing dominance of the field.

weberfan,
Will you spot us a link when your posse gets to the hard facts?
fantasmacantos,
David's right--if anyone would know, it's weberfan. If I'm not mistaken, he's one of those who axiomatically "buy ink by the barrel".
Good job being out ahead of the story.

Well, David, I admit my bias, and concur with your assessment of the Times. I don't agree with your assessment fully, because I have a narrower definition of [news]paper. I consider the Times to be the best of the few newspapers on the planet.
