 440 vs 442 mouthpieces

I was wondering how mouthpiece design differs for major manufactures (Vandoren, Backun, etc.) for models designed to play at 440 or 442. Is it more about changing the overall length (like a longer vs shorter barrel), or a different shape of the baffle or other internal dimensions (which can change the color of sound as well as pitch)? For instance, what physically makes an average B40 different from an average B40 13?

With vandoren, and I assume others as well, the lower pitched mouthpieces have a much deeper baffle and overall are larger inside.

I don't think they are longer in length, although I know people shorten the 440 mouthpieces when they play too low to bring the pitch up.

Generally the lower pitched mouthpieces are slightly more diffused in sound, "darker", and from my (and others) experience play lower in the left hand and throat tones than the rest of the instrument.

Hopefully others will come and write more specifics regarding dimensions.

Regarding the B40, it seems to be the overall internal size of the tone chamber (the baffle is deep on both 13 and non 13 models).

But some manufacturers do in fact shorten the overall length to achieve the same result such as the Genusa. The 442 Genusas are actually several milimeters shorter. I personally don't think shortening the length of the bore is the best way to achieve this result.

Having said that, I am NOT fond of the so called "440" style mouthpieces since they tend to force problems in tuning the twelfths, and cause more biting and less finessing by the inexperienced.
