 Yamaha YCL-220
Author: Kontra

I currently play a vintage wooden Buffet to low E. I have 3 solos in our spring concert, one of them is difficult, and Ive always thought I just wasnt practicing hard enough. Last night at All County Honor Band, the other Bass Clarinetist had a Yamaha YCL-221 II. It really is everything everyone says it is. It has a beautiful sound, the keys are very comfortable. I was able to play my solo perfectly, going over the register break so fast was do able, and the upper register wasnt so stuffy. Considering I cant afford an $1800 instrument right now, I have seen a YCL-220 that I might be able to afford, and was wondering would this be a better alternative until I get the money for the YCL-221 II? Or is it nothing like the YCL-221 II?

The 221 is a Yamaha and very good. The 220 is supposedly a Yamaha but actually it is a Vito and identical to one of the Vito models. The 221 is different, a real Yamaha design and much better.

I've played on both and clarinbass is absolutey right. In fact a tech who
sets up Yamaha clarinets confirms that the 221 is superior
in every way to the 220.

I recently bought the Yamaha 621 pro model and it seems to me that the
221, while not wood, was modeled after the pro 621.

Kontra. The Yamaha may be great, but it sounds as if your Buffet needs servicing... by a GOOD technician.

Hi Gordon, I think you were confused from YCL-221 and YFL-221. The former, which Kontra asked about, is a bass clarinet.

I agree about repairing the Buffet bass clarinet. Actually I think I rememember Kontra mentioned in another thread that he/she knows it needs repairs.

BTW someone just happened to mention this on another thread, the Yamaha 220 is a Vito 7166.

Thanks you guys. Yes, I am getting it repaired right now, and I'm hoping it will be back before my big concert. Luckily, it only costed about $60.
