 Differences between Buffet A Bells
Author: normancult

Hi there,

I was just wondering if there is any real differences between the Buffet A Festival bell and the regular A R13 bell.

That's because I'm considering to buy an A Festival but it does come with a R13 bell.

That can be a serious tuning / emission problem or it is just an engraving detail?

Thank you very much.

AFAIK (from Buffet) the bell and barrel of the Festival and the R13 Prestige models are the same. This is the same as R13 except supposedly better wood of the Festival and Prestige models. No real difference and definitely shouldn't affect playing in any way different than just another Festival bell (i.e. non to very little difference at most).

The 2 Festival A clarinets that i have owned both had/have bells with a larger bore at the top compared with the R 13 A bells... this reduced the "choke effect" that is standard issue with R13. Both these clarinets, however, had/have been worked on by top notch "customiser" types who may have adjusted the bells. Btw I have twice played R13s that have had the bell bore reamed to reduce/adjust the choke and these were very fine clarinets.

I wrote to buffet asking this question. Let's see what they say.
Thank you for both answers.

Sorry, I didn't notice you asked about A clarinets. What I wrote was for Bb clarinets and maybe A clarinets are different.

Buffet R13 Bb and A bells are definitely different. The difference is the same as Donald notes for the Festivals: the A bell has less choke at the top. They are not interchangeable.

I've read that Buffet also makes a "light bulb" shaped bell, I believe for the Festival, which has a wider area midway down. I haven't tried one and don't know what difference they make.

just to clarify: I know that the Bb and A bells are completely different.
I just want to discover if there is any difference between the Festival Model bell and the respective R13 - both in A.
The question is: are they interchangeable or not? If not why?
