Does anyone here have opinions on the wheaton conservatory in illinois? I've been into all the big names, but i actually prefer wheaton over any of the others. Good decision bad decision? Going into clarinet performance.

Go visit the school and talk to the clarinet prof(s). You will need a relationship with them. That's probably a lot more important than what other people think.

I've never heard of the school and I live in Chicago. I think there a lot of programs here with outstanding faculty that I would look into before this school.

A dynamite flutist from this area is in her second year there and loves it. Visiting is the only way, however, to determine for yourself whether you should consider the program.

Very conservative school,a tenured professor was fired after his divorce a few years ago.
Of course this has nothing to do with clarinet faculty though.

No ... whether or not you like their rules, I'll wager they're not hidden when you join their employ. It doesn't imply AT ALL a 'full of crap' factor.
I might think celibacy most certainly isn't for me, but I don't think all priests are full of crap ...

It's the dogma that's full of crap for me.
People can't control if they get divorced or not - it takes two. Firing a faculty member because he's now "not godly enough" from being in a divorce is to me full of crap.
I've seen it numerous times. It shouldn't happen ever.

It could be all hear say, does anyone really know the facts? Anyway, check out their program, the ensembles, their course work, the music faculty. Of course visit the school and arrange to take a lesson with the clarinet instructor. That's the only way you will know if you would like to go there. Also, consider the tuition and fees, you don't want to go into debt if it's expensive and you have to take out loans if instead, you can go to another qualified school that you're comfortable with that is less expensive or you can get a large scholarship at. To many of todays students taking performance degrees and have to go into debt to do it, for a profession that very very few can make a living from. My advice to you, and everyone else is this, don't go into debt to get a performance degree. There are so many choices out there for qualified students so consider finances very carefully in your decision. You might want to read my article of Symphony Jobs in the USA on my website. Thanks for the input...I've worked with the instructor there once.
Her name is Susan Warner...plays with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, soloist, chamber musician, etc. Very knowledgeable. Whether she would offer the same as the faculty of other conservatories in the Chicago area I don't know yet...
David: Where are the alumni that you know of today? Educators? Performers? Regional orchestras? Free lance artists?

I know Sue Warner and she's a great player and devoted teacher. Besides Lyric, she plays in the Prairie Winds (Wind Quintet) with her husband, David Griffin of the Chicago Symphony. For my money, Prairie Winds is one of the best Wind Quintets in the country. If you're looking for a Christian school with a solid music program, Wheaton might be the place for you. Wheaton has been around a long time. I've heard it described as the "Ivy League" of Christian colleges.
Anyway, I agree with Ed. Without knowing the facts, I'm inclined to reserve judgment on Wheaton based only on the account of the dismissed professor. There may be more (or less) to the story.

Susan Warner is great. When I looked at the website for this school, it listed someone else as the clarinet teacher which is why I said to look at other places. With Susan Warner as the teacher, the school is a lot more appealing.
Good luck.
