Thomas Täglichsbeck, * 31. Dez. 1799 in Ansbach, † 5. Okt. 1867 in Baden-Baden (both district centers here in southern Germany).
From early childhood T. was trained as a violinist. He first worked in orchestras
in Munich and subsequently became "Hofkapellmeister" (director of music) to the Hohenzollern, one of the more important german lines of sovereigns. Reportedly, he got their orchestra pretty much up to speed, and was also considered one of the foremost violin virtuosi in Germany.
As to his compositions, contemporaries considered them technically sound and pleasant but not too exciting. His first symphony was premiered in Paris (which apparently meant something at the time), but Hector Berlioz didn't like it: ".. c'est de la musique scolastique, mais rien de plus".
So thanks for the pointer to the quintet -- will have a look at it and see myself.
Regards
