Happy New Year!
I'm considering doing a recital (haven't done one since I was in college), and I had an idea a few years back to do a program entirely of American music for clarinet, solo and chamber. Here's what I have so far:
Bernstein Sonata
Osborne Rhapsody
Gershwin Three Preludes
a short Benny Goodman set (w/ combo)
These are ideas, and I'm looking for more. I'm ruling out Copland because I'd want to do it with a string section, but I don't think I can get an entire one together. What are your favorite pieces, solo or chamber, for clarinet written by American composers?

Since you're considering the Gershwin Preludes and the Osborne Rhapsody, it appears that you aren't opposed to transcriptions. There's a Copland Sonata (transcribed from the violin sonata by the composer in consult with several clarinetists) that's worth checking out.

The Artie Shaw "Concerto for Clarinet" has an orchestral accompaniment available on rental from G. Schirmer. There is also a band accompaniment available (which I have used many times) that can be ordered. It can also be reduced to a jazz ensemble.
Another "fav" of mine is "Benny's Gig" written by Morton Gould as a birthday present for Benny Goodman. A series of seven semi short clarinet and bass duets in different stylings. (His brother was a bassist)
Also, "Five Variations" for solo clarinet by Les Thimmig, published by G. Schirmer. Written for clarinetist Richard DeBaise and premiered at Yale University, May 15, 1967. Rhythmic and technical difficulty (bought it and never took the time to learn it :>/

Two of my students recently performed the Arthur Frackenpohl Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano.
Written in 1948 and dedicated to the clarinetist Richard Waller.

It's great that you're supporting American music. When I was asked to do a recital in NJ later this Spring, the pianist and I decided to do the same thing. In addition to the Bernstein Sonata, we're also doing Elliot Carter's Pastoral. It's originally for English Horn, but Carter made a version for clarinet too.
Depending on the interval from now until the concert, you may consider commissioning a composer or two to write something new for you. That way you can help contribute to the repertoire for the next clarinetist looking to do a program like this. (We're doing 3 pieces written for us in the last 14 months. If you want some of those, you're welcome to play them after we do!)

Zounds--I forgot that Alec Wilder also wrote a Concerto for clarinet and orchestra dedicated to my old UW-WI clarinet professor, Glenn Bowen. It is available for rental only, but G. Schirmer will send you the score and a copy of the clarinet solo for your review before deciding to order. Too bad it doesn't have a piano reduced accompaniment to make it more accessable for clarinetists. Probably not the chamber kind of work you are seeking, but I thought I would toss the info out here anyhow--someone else may be interested...........

Dello Joio is great. His Concertina and Three Essays. Muc's Time Pieces is a very good work. Libby Larsens Dancing Solo, Edward Yadzinsky Sirene, Joan Tower Wings, Donald Martino A Set for Clarinet, Miklos Rozsa Sonatina (one of my favorite) Persichetti Parable, Theldon Myers Sonata is a good romantic type piece just to name a few. I played Joan Tower's Fantasy (...those harbor lights), which seemed to go down very well.

Greetings, again, all!
So, my solo recital has become a joint recital with a flute colleague of mine. Still all American music. We've pretty much got our program together, but I'd like another chamber piece. And here's where my ideas get me into trouble: I think a piece for flute, clarinet, and guitar would be cool. I'm having trouble finding a piece for this instrumentation by an American composer.
Ideas?

I don't know anything for that instrumentation either; though you could always do a jazz tune.
As for other material, I'd strongly second the recommendation of Martino's "A Set for Clarinet". There are lots of notes to learn, but it's one of the most fun pieces out there, in my opinion. Michael Webster's "Five Pieces" is also a nice solo work.
If you're open to replacing your guitarist with a bassoonist, Walter Piston's Trio for that instrumentation is pretty good.

Speaking of Muczynski, there is his Fantasy Trio (cl, vcl pno) which can be done effectively with bassoon instead of cello.
And, since there is a flute in the mix now, the Muczynski duo for fl and cl.

A chamber piece using Clarinet/Flute/Guitar? There is a piece called "Chamber Suite" by.... er... I'm trying to remember from more than 10 years ago.... hang on i'll use Google....

Yeah, I think I'm going to go with Larsen's 3 Pieces for Treble Wind and Guitar (new to me, just discovered it), and add a couple Muczinsky duets as a piece for the two of us.

Muczynski also wrote a trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon. Nice piece.
