 Mouthpiece help

I tried playing my new Leblanc Straight Contra Alto Clarinet today, and my Selmer mouthpiece was way to small to fit, so my director put tape around it until it finally fit, and when i played it was hard to get a sound out on it, but I did with a lot of squeaks, couldnt play upper octave. Is this my mouthpiece, me, or maybe the instrument needs to be looked at, considering it came from Washington state to Tennessee? Thanks.

In my personal experience, a new mouthpiece takes some getting used to. Play on it for a while before you decide to give it up.

For example... I have an m13 mouthpiece for my usual Bb clarinet. I recently came into possession of a Selmer Bundy, and I put my m13 on that to see if I could get a better sound on it. I noticed that it acknowledges the pad leaks a lot more than the mouthpiece that came with it.

BTW, I had relatively the same problem when I first got my m13. I hated playing on it, but eventually my old mouthpiece finally cracked completely, and I had to use the m13 from then. I was quite the different experience. I kept getting squeaks, couldn't play any notes that use the bottom joint, etc. But now, after a little time spent with it, I don't think I can ever get rid of it. :) I hope not since I constantly accidentally bang it on hard surfaces. :/

Sounds like a problem with the instrument, something like a leak. That's the first thing to check. Or it could be the size of the mouthpiece, maybe even still leaking from the mouthpiece connection.
