The Hacker recording of the Mozart Quintet is at least 25 years old. I have it on LP.
It's an excellent performance, but rather astringent. The leader of the Salomon Quartet, Jaap Schroeder, had what I can only describe as an unpleasant, metallic tone. I heard him play live many times, and it was always medicinal. Hacker, at least at that time, had an extremely bright, lively tone (rather like Anthony Gigliotti) that was almost impossible to record well. When I heard him play live, it was amazing, but recordings were not kind to him.
I also Met Hacker, at the Clarinet Congress in London a number of hears ago. He was utterly charming and anxious to share his insights.
