 Alan Hacker

Just thought I would share this with all my fellow BBboarders

Many years ago I had the great opportunity to meet Alan Hacker after a performance. (It was in London in 86)

After the recital I got a chance to speak with him albeit briefly....he was truly a fine gentleman as well as a great scholar. He was also very encouraging to the clarinet students who were invited after the recital to meet him!

I just received a recording of the Mozart Quintet done by Alan Hacker with the Salomen Quartet on period instruments. It is truly superb and he is of course at the forefront of period instrument performance and approaching this subject. His recording is this one.

Thanks Mr. Hacker!

The Hacker recording of the Mozart Quintet is at least 25 years old. I have it on LP.

It's an excellent performance, but rather astringent. The leader of the Salomon Quartet, Jaap Schroeder, had what I can only describe as an unpleasant, metallic tone. I heard him play live many times, and it was always medicinal. Hacker, at least at that time, had an extremely bright, lively tone (rather like Anthony Gigliotti) that was almost impossible to record well. When I heard him play live, it was amazing, but recordings were not kind to him.

I also Met Hacker, at the Clarinet Congress in London a number of hears ago. He was utterly charming and anxious to share his insights.

I haven't heard Hacker's recording of K581, but his Finzi Concerto recording is excellent and has been a personal favorite for many years.

I have to disagree with you on this one Ken. In my view the sound of all players on this Hacker Mozart Quintet recording is little short of ideal. This is a great account from the sonic and musical perspective.

Hacker was more controversial in his accounts of the Brahms Sonatas and Trio on another original instruments Amon Ra recording. His sound there was gruff and at times pushed well to the extremes. On the other hand, it is a wonderfully vivid account which you would probably love or hate. I love it.

Hacker also helped me with some information following an enquiry I made. I think he is a very pleasant person and a wonderful asset to the clarinet world.

Jaap Schröder is very respected here in Iceland. He has directed and performed as soloist with the The Skálholt Bach Consort(The first Icelandic chamber croup to perform on period instruments) every summer since 1993 and also this past summer.

Skálholt is a historical church here in Iceland <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skálholt> where summer Festival is held every summer in July through first weekend of August with mainly Baroque music but also some new music.

In 2001 he got the Icelandic Falcon badge of honour from the president of Iceland.

Iceland -

Jaap Schroeder is a highly intelligent, utterly dedicated scholar and student of historical violin playing. He deserves every award he receives. It's just that I find him a better scholar than violinist. De gustibus non est disputandum.
