 Bass Clarinet recital piece
Author: Melissa
Date:   2009-09-22 01:27

I'm currently looking for a Bass Clarinet piece to play on my masters recital and wondered if anyone has any favorites they would recommend. I'm pretty open and think the crazier the better.

Have you considered improvising. Our local Professor of Composition & Jazz has given many clarinet & sax solo recitals by simply walking on stage and playing whatever "comes to mind". One memorable example was a solo played on his contra bass clarinet which he said was inspired by a circus elephant he observed while playing a Ringling Bros. show at our Colesium venue. He once told me (before an Eb clarinet solo recital) that, "a lack of repretoire has never held him back" from playing a program. Perhaps this could be a "test of faith" for your musical skills as well. And, it could be fun.

FYI, here is a link: http://uwpress.wisc.edu/books/4748.htm

A nice, somewhat pointillistic duet for Bb clarinet and bass clarinet is "Neun Expressionen" by Alireza Maschayeki.

Thanks everyone! I will definitely check all of these out. If it helps I'm a master performance student and it's a graded recital, therefore improvising would probably be looked down upon although I would definitely do that in an ungraded performance.

An excellent little piece, and right under our noses so to speak, is the Sonatina by Richard Hervig. You can find it in the Rubank Concert and Contest Collection for bass clarinet. It's a little gem, and totally overlooked.

You can also play any solo piece written for regular clarinet if you are capable. ESP

Somewhere I have a solo CD put out by the German bass clarinetist, Renate Rusch, and one of the tracks is the Messaien Abime des Oiseaux (originally written for soprano clarinet but she plays it quite effectively on bass); elsewhere in threads past the Hindemith bassoon sonata was mentioned in connection with Josef Horak, who played the piece in concert, and managed to get an endorsement of sorts from Hindemith himself on the notion of substituting bass clarinet for bassoon. Finally, I remember someone adapting the Casals arrangement of the Catalonian folk ballad "Song of the Birds" for bass clarinet. It's not a difficult piece (possibly a little too simple for your recital), and would have to be transposed from bass and tenor (?) clef. It's available for cello and piano.

I have the Rusch CD as well. It also has the Hindemith, Shoeck, Lumen, and Mladi Youth suite. I have heard the Messaien played several times successfully by bass clarinetists.

You might want to check the sibeliusmusic.com and finalemusic.com sites, I also know that the Classic Festival Solos has a collection of pieces for bass clarinet and piano.

At your level, the Schoeck would be appropriate. Also, I think, Voltage by DuBois.

David Loeb has written 5 sonatas for bass clarinet solo. Henri Bok has recorded them. As I recall, they become progressively more challenging -- e.g., the first requiring no extended techniques (maybe a little flutter tonguing), the later sonatas eventually using multiphonics and perhaps other extended techniques. It's been awhile since I listened though.
Originally released by Vienna Modern Masters, Arkive Music has added this CD to its reissue list and prints it on demand. You can find the listing at:

http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/Name/David-Loeb/Composer/7245-1

Just scroll down the page.

The neat thing about this CD is that, in addition to the Bok performances, it contains pdf files of the sheet music for all of the Sonatas -- IMO, a bargain at USD16.99 plus shipping. (I would hope an operation as large as theirs would ship to Canada.)

If you haven't already checked this out, take a look at Alea Publishing. They have a number of works for bass clarinet:

http://www.bassclarinet.org/alea/

Another source worth checking out, if you haven't already is Michael Lowenstern's website, Earspasm:

http://www.earspasm.com/indexNew.html

If you click on the shopping cart, you will open a window that allows you to order sheet music or download sheet music from a number of his recordings. There are also mp3 excerpts. All sorts of other goodies on the site, too.

Best regards,
jnk

@ above,

The arkiv CD does NOT include the PDF files. A member here referred me to them as well. When the CD got to me I discovered Arkiv can't reproduce PDF files onto CDs. They ended up letting me keep the CD for free, but I don't have the score.

"The arkiv CD does NOT include the PDF files."

Bummer! Sorry about that (but at least you got a free CD). I'll try again. The original recording was on Vienna Modern Masters. According to the VMM website, their U.S. distributor is:

http://www.cdemusic.org/

They show the CD as available (search on Loeb and scroll down the resulting "list") for 14 USD. The listing says, "The complete scores for the Five Sonatas for solo bass clarinet can be printed from this CD" but, given the experience with Arkiv, one might want to contact CDE Music to make sure before ordering that they have the original VMM pressing. Their e-mail address is:

cde@emf.org

At the VMM website:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~gdv/vmm/

there is a brief comment on the 5th Sonata by the composer as well as .ram sound files (Real Media Player) of excerpts from 3 of the sonatas.

Best regards,
jnk
