Has anyone here (Tony, Peter C, others) played the Mendelssohn Overture in its original version, which calls for 2 clarinets in F, 2 in C and 2 basset horns in F?
Does anyone know of a recording using the original forces? I can't find one in the usual obvious places (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.)
I want my U of Richmond students to play this in the "modern" band version, but want to get a sense of the original scoring and sound to guide our rehearsals.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

David -
Walking Frog Records is the great source for band recordings. They have a performance by the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra on WFR423, but I don't know if it's the original version. Go to http://www.walkingfrog.com/ and click on Advanced Search and search for Mendelssohn Overture. Perhaps you could get in touch with the WWO conductor.
There are a number of YouTube performances.
The piece is great fun, and I'd really like to hear the original version. Please let us know if you find one.

The IMSLP has a score of the original version, though perhaps you knew that.
What is/was the clarinet in F? Like the Eb, only smaller? Who else wrote for it?

I have played the original version and indeed have the parts. The scoring for this is, flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in C, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, trumpet and a string bass though a contra can be used. The score says contrabasso or serpent. I can email a live recording of us playing it if you like. Mendelsshon re-scored later for the bigger group with basset horns et al
