 How do Canadians order stuff??!!
Author: Curinfinwe
Date:   2009-08-06 17:13

I want to order a Hercules flute, piccolo, and clarinet combo stand and a Korg TM40 Metronome/Tuner. I'm getting really fed up, though, because every site I've tried to order from won't ship those to Canada due to manufacturer's restrictions! Are there any Canadian sites? The local music store, Long and Mcquade, is awful. They order stuff in for you, then it never comes, or if it does come, they don't call you and tell you and you have to pester them. And their inventory is always wrong. Several times I've called and been told that something's in stock, only to arrive later and find out that-oops!- they can't find it.
Sorry for that little rant there, but hopefully somebody can help.

I just called Weiner Music http://shop.weinermusic.com/ and asked them about shipping to Canada.

They said that they do it all the time.

I just priced things out at Weiner, and a box of reeds, stand and tuner is $115. The same thing at other places that don't ship to Canada is about $70. Aagh. I can't really spend much money- I have to save for university next year, so I guess I'll just have to suck it up and not buy anything else for a few weeks.
Thanks for calling them!

These folks apparently sell Korg tuners, and they're in Nova Scotia. They're a guitar place, but everyone needs to be able play in tune. Don't know if they do mail orders, but they might be close enough to you that it wouldn't matter:

I'd also check the manufacturers' websites to see who sells their products. For instance, I found the above website by going to http://www.korgcanada.com.

Another possibility would be to order from the Long & McQuade online store. They may be easier to deal with than the local store.

Hope this helps.

Steve Fox gave me this advice for US to Canada shipments. Always have the shipper us the US Postal Service, which is fast and reliable. NEVER use UPS or FedEx. UPS in particular always messes up with customs and insists on hiring a customs agent.

I made the mistake of using UPS once, and a clarinet that needed to get to Steve quickly got ensnared for over a month. UPS somehow assigned two shipment numbers, neither hand knew what the other was doing, and three separate UPS departments kept pointing fingers at everyone else and saying they had no responsibility.

I've ordered through Woodwind and Brasswind if I can't get it locally (like soon for a new clarinet barrel to use on both my Bb and A clarinets) and a couple other things too. Usually I get them in in about 2 weeks.

I've ordered from Woodwind and Brasswind, and several other sites that are American based before, and was pleased. The problem seems to be the prodeucts I want, the hercules combo stand, the korg tuner and v12 reeds. Why would that be?

It's probably because these manufacturers have exclusive distributor agreements with a distributors (wholesalers) in Canada. The distributors for the US are different. The manufacturers don't want to end up in a lawsuit for violating the exclusive agreements by allowing the US distributors and retailers to sell in the Canadian distributors' territory.

Must be the hercules or korg. I've had reeds shipped from the states to quebec several times with no problem.

I know Korg has some kind of exclusive distributorship arrangement. Hercules might, too.

I ship to Canada all the time.

Steve Fox is right, never use UPS to send stuff to Canada.

Better yet, never use UPS, they break stuff.

Being a fellow Canadian music studnet always in need of supplies, I completly understand the frustration you are facing Curinfinwe. I always try to buy locally to save on postage, but when it comes to ordering from the states I have had the best luck with Muncy Winds. They send orders very promptly to Canada and there prices are one of the better ones. Take your order for instance, it comes to $77.89 including shipping. However, don't forget it is in U.S dollars. Hope that helps.

If you live close enough to the border (and have your passport to enter the great U.S.A. without problems) you could set up a P.O. box, which is what we did in Blaine, Washington when we lived outside of Vancouver, British Columbia. The other option is to have a friend in the States that you could visit every few months, and plan your order when you go to visit your friend. We do that now that we've moved to Ontario. Stay in the States at least 2 days, depending on the value of your order, and then you don't have to pay duty - just the HST when you return.

Of course you may live too far from the border for those to be options.

Thanks everyone. The people that said about Muncy and a few other places, thanks, but I guess it's just the specific products that I want. Oops. And I wish I lived close to the border, but I'm a 6 hour drive away, and I don't have my license anyway. I think I'll be able to work something out with the person who asked me to email them privately, as well.
Thanks again everyone!

If all else fails, you can use a parcel forwarding service. When I studied abroad, I used Shipito to get things from retailers that didn't ship internationally. They charge an $8.50 fee plus the shipping.
