What does everyone think about the protec double case? I'm thinking I might buy one. It's on wwbw for $94, which seems like a good deal compared to the expensive BAM cases. A few questions I have about it:
How deep are the storage compartments on the inside?
Does the outside pocket hold lots of music?
Does anyone have any complaints about the case?
I finally got myself a summer job, so a double case is something that I'll be able to afford and I like the look of this one. Are there any other cases that are similar and similarly priced?
Thanks!
EDIT: I found this:

but I don't know... the outside pocket wouldn't hold much, and I really need a pocket that will hold lots of music. Does anyone know anything about it?

I have, and use, the Pro Tec double and I love it. The main problem is that it does not hold the clarinets tight so I bought and tacked in a piece of chamise and added a bit of foam here and there to keep the clarinets from moving around. I also have my Bb and my A sitting slightly different positions to keep them secure but you can figure that out too. I bought my case many years ago so they may have improved it but I love it. You can get a reasonable amount of stuff in the storage but not a hugh amount. If you're willing to make a few adjustments it's well worth the price. ESP

This was on the pro tec website:
http://www.protecmusic.com/items.aspx?ProductID=1383&InstrumentID=10&InstrumentGroupID=8&CategoryID=2&subCategoryID=7
It doesn't look like the one on wwbw:

I assume that the first one is newer, but does anyone know if wwbw will be carrying it at any point. I'd rather have the newer one, but I don't want to pay an extra $50 for it.

I have a colleague who just purchased a new one. I seemed very nice and held the instruments very well. My only complaint is that the outside pocket did not seem to be big enough for music. To me that is a major drawback.
I would do some searches (including auction sites) to find what you want. While money is always an issue, I think it is important to get something you will be really happy with, even if it means spending a few more bucks. You will be happier in the long run, when you consider the amount of use it will get.

Pro Tec has recently redesigned all of their cases to look the the newer one
on the Pro Tec site. They are really pretty classy looking now. The interior has not changed, (at least on the single Bb size) but the outside looks a lot different.
I have not purchased a double since they changed the look, but I have purchased the Pro Tec Slimline and the Carry All from WWBW and they
shipped me the newer design. They still show the old version in their photos but they ship you the new version. I would assume they are now carrying the newer style double also, but you could call them and check to make sure.
The Protec Double is probably the best double case out there for the price.
You can also purchase optional backpack strap for an additional $15.

My daughter uses the Protec double (older version) for her two Buffet Bb and A clarinets, and is quite satisfied with it. She's had it for 4 years now. Her instructor, a symphony player, said this was one of the best value double cases he knows of.
She keeps music in the outside pouch, (she also has a small totebag for binders, her eefer, etc.) and the interior storage for accessories in the Protec is quite good. The accessory tray is pretty deep.

I've had a protec double case for about 6 years, my biggest issue with it is the lack of a slot for extra barrels.

The ProTec cases are a great value for the price. I have a double and am very pleased with it. The pocket on mine is big enough for my music.
I also wish there were slots for two more barrels, but they fit fine in the accessories tray, which is quite large.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm still trying to decide between buying a protec case and getting an aunt, who is extremely good at sewing and making things, to stitch me up a bag that I can put my current case in. I just won't be using my A clarinet much, except for orchestra, so I'm a bit torn, because it's such a nice case.

The middle accessory compartment on the Pro-Tec double case is 12"L x 1 1/2"W x 3" deep. Plenty of room for extra barrels and assorted other supplies.
I use a Pro-Tec double case as my "traveling to performance case". It's very functional and quite rugged.
I've never had trouble fitting in it everything I've ever needed to bring to a performance.
However - I don't like putting the double Blayman stand in the case pocket, so I always bring a small separate laptop computer bag (which can also hold oversized music folders) for that purpose.

Ah yes, stands. I need to get one of those for orchestra as well. Is there anything that's a good deal cheaper than a Blayman stand, but still functional, for A and Bb, that would fit inside a case?

These are light, sturdy, and inexpensive. Mine is over 10 years old and still going strong. A Tom Bihn "Ultimate Shoulder Strap" made it easier to carry. I wish they made a triple case...

I bought mine about 6 months ago for about $100 CDN, and generally like it, only wish the picket was bigger for music. Really good for keeping the heat and cold out. My cats seem to have used it for a place to scratch though.
