Patriotic clarinet quintet or quartet music?
Author: packrat

Our clarinet quintet has been asked to perform on a 4th of July patriotic concert, but we have no "patriotic" music to perform. We do have a few pieces by American composers, but that is not what they want. Has anyone played any pieces that are based on patriotic melodies? Our group can play intermediate to advanced music.

I've ordered a couple of marches (Sousa) with an online service, but I'm looking for something more lyrical to contrast with those pieces. Any ideas? If so, where do you suggest I get them. Perhaps someone that specializes in clarinet or woodwind ensemble music? I've already searched the better know online sources (I don't know if I can name them on the board or not).

Thanks to all of the players that respond. I'm sort of baffled.

How about playing some brass quintet/quartet music on the clarinet? There must be some patriotic medlys written for brass.

Bill Holcombe has good arrangements of Sousa marches for trio, quartet or quintet. I think it's www.windmusicplus.com

There are a few patriotic items on sibeliusmusic.com. You will need to search. All their stuff prints on line.

Just to nit-pick...

Patriotic with respect to which country? If you want, I could do you some arrangements of 'Rule, Britannia' or 'Land of Hope and Glory'. Not, I suspect, what you are after. I assume from your July 4 reference and ISP that you are in the US. Don't assume that everyone is.

(Expects retaliation now I got that off my chest)

Mike Clarinet, no retaliation from me. I see no reason why people in various countries couldn't perform "patriotic music" on the 4th of July. How about "Oh Canada" ?

Try "Armed Forces Salute" by Villanueva. You can find this on the dornpub.com website under clarinet quartet: just scroll down to Villanueva. I can't say that it's lyrical but it is a nicely arranged medley of different U.S. armed forces themes.

Maybe some Joplin or Gershwin as an encore.

There probably are some clarinet ensemble arrangements of "America", "Simple Gifts", some Gershwin stuff, or maybe the Ives "Variations on 'America'", etc.
