Mozart Requiem R. Levin Clarinet Parts
Author: Sylvain

I know this is sacrilege but I am in a bind.

I have been asked last minute to play 2nd in the Robert Levin completion of the requiem and there are only basset horn parts.

I have two options and I need your help:
1- Find 2 basset horns (the 1st player does not have one either). I am in the Boston area any tips contact info would be great.

2- Play the parts on the clarinet. Since I am too incompetent to sight-transpose a major third down (to A) or fourth (to Bb), I need to transcribe the parts. Please tell me someone on this board has done it already!!

Concert is 5/8 so there is some urgency to this.

Thank you!

PS: I know it is sacrilegeous to play it on the clarinet, but at this point I may not have a choice.

Sylvain,
Check with Albert Alphin. I think my old teacher Ian Greitzer used to rent one from him when he needed to play it. Albert's contact info is in the Service section of the Bulletin Board's Sponsor section. (right hand column)
Best wishes,

see if you can find Robert Howe in Connecticut. He might still own several basset horns, if he hasn't sold them all.

I think it will be hard to find transposed parts for the Levin completion.

If I'm not mistaken, I think Levin scored one of the sections (Sanctus?) for A clarinets, so you'll be ok there.

And the opening (Introitus/Kyrie) should be playable on any edition that has transposed parts, since Mozart completed it, and Levin didn't need to do anything. You can order the clarinet parts from Kalmus.

So, maybe there's less to transcribe than you think.

You could also contact Levin himself at Harvard. From the Harvard website:

I can't speak for this specific arrangement of the Requiem though I believe I've played it several years ago on basset horn. The original Mozart version, which is for basset horn too, except for a few movements, is often played all on the clarinet. There is a published clarinet version of it. When we did the Requiem this year with the BSO we did it with clarinets, not basset horns. You can probably buy the clarinet parts. Look up the publisher and ask. You can then make whatever adjustment to the part to fit the Levin part. Option two, sit down for a couple of hours and write out a transposed part, or use a computer programs if you know how. Option three, see if you know someone that can do it for you.
Good luck, ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

I have the Kalmus parts already, and even the opening has some differences :(
Anyway, thanks for the contact info for Basset Horns.

Both parts are being transcribed professionally for us. Not sure if I can post publicly, but you can email me directly and I'll see what I can do.

Ed,

There are no clarinet parts in any of the versions of Mozart's Requiem. I've done quite a few versions on both modern and period basset horn, including the Sussmayr, Eybler, Druce versions and not one has had any clarinet parts.

IMO, it loses something on the clarinet.

Peter-
While I agree it loses something, versions for clarinet do exist. I've played at least two of them.

Peter -

the basset horn is a clarinet

Best: Mozart Requiem with basset horns
Good: Mozart Requiem with clarinets (if no bh available)
Worst: No Mozart Requiem at all

Larryb,

I find your post a little patronising, I'm well aware that a basset horn is a clarinet in F.

Vin, I realise that in the absence of basset horns there are transcribed parts for clarinets. Infact the Barenreiter edition of Sussmayr's version comes with both basset horn and clarinet parts, I know because I have them both.

My post was in reference to Ed Palanker's coment,

"The original Mozart version, which is for basset horn too, except for a few movements, is often played all on the clarinet."

This is not the case.

There is no original Mozart version.

"...which is for basset horn too, except for a few movements,"

All versions that I know of apart from Levin's -- of course, neither myself nor Peter can claim a knowledge of ALL versions -- are entirely for bassethorns.

Levin scores one movement for clarinets, based on his conviction that Mozart would not have written in the key of that movement for bassethorns.

"..is often played all on the clarinet."

This is, perhaps unfortunately, true.

Tony

I understand the the first published version (Breitkopf, 1800?) contained clarinet parts. Does anyone know if there were even basset horn parts in that edition too?

Apparently, the famous Tuba mirum trombone solo was (sometimes, ocassionally) played on bassoon at that time too. Is that true?
