 Rico Reed Vitalizer
Author: Curinfinwe
Date:   2009-03-09 15:46

I got one of these a few months ago and I've noticed the difference in my reeds. However, a few days ago the latch broke off. I wasn't pulling on it; it just snapped with regular, normal use. This has pretty much rendered the case useless as a vitalizer, because the seal's not there. So, my question is, would Rico replace it? Or should I buy a new one?
Thanks!

What about a Zip-Loc bag?

All you need to do is to put a rubberband around it. That will seal it. The Ziploc won't be thick enough, I suggest to my students to put a ziplock around the reed holder.

That begs the question do you have the plastic bag reed vitalizer, or do you have the hard black reed holder? Rubberband for the reedholder is what to use. If the bag (ziplock style) zipper broke, I'd get either a reed vault, or the hard black holder. They last a LOT longer.

Hard black holder. I'll use a rubber band. Also, what is a good way to break in reeds that ensures I'll get a long, good life out of them? I must confess I've never broken in reeds properly, just slapped them on my mouthpiece and played them until they died a few weeks later. My parents have finally consented to buying me some reeds that I really like and are more expensive, and I'd like to not waste them, as audition/festival season is coming up and I know I won't be getting another box before then. Also, should I break in the entire box at once and then just take the good ones, or what?

Alright, in my lesson today I opened up the holder, flipped the flippy thing over, and it broke. One of the pivoty things just snapped.
Do you think the music store would replace it if I pressured them enough?

Sounds like you must have dropped it before. If not, or even if you did, that pivot doesn't matter at all. Just put the holder in and seal it - the pivot doesn't last very long at all as that plastic piece is quite small.

If you haven't had it from long at all you may try returning/exchanging it though.

The durability of the Rico Reed case is very poor. The slot inside broke after couple of months of use and the latch of my 11 year old student broke within couple of days.

Reed vault is highly durable.

I use a freezer bag for my bass reeds because I just keep the reeds in my old reed holder. I just make sure the bag is always closed, it works great, no problem at all. ESP www.peabody.jhu.edu/457

At least where I live, the Reed Vault costs three times more than the same thing sold in a kitchen shop as a water-tight lunch box.

Compare:

£12.17 Reed Vault: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop/flypage/product_id/37886

£3.81 Lunch Box: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kitchen-Craft-Airtight-Storage-Container/dp/B000LCLW7C

Perhaps worth bearing in mind if you need reed storage.

I must say, this kind of "value-add" leaves me very disappointed in companies. Or am I missing something?

David.

Fishamble, you can use anything that is air tight with a vitalizer refill pack inside, they only cost $4-$5. The cases are nice but not necessary, as I said, I keep my bass reeds on my old reed case with a refill in a freezer bag. ESP

Yeah, it's off-topic. Yet - despite his merits - that quote makes Beecham a silly old man.

Ed I use a freezer bag and put my Steuer 12 reed leather case inside along with desiccant canister and humidity indicator strip and have no problem even when we even at the same day 30% and 60% humidity here in Iceland.

Yup, it's the vitalizer refill pack that is what is important.

Can't get that at a local kitchen store.

Well Iceland, as we say in the USA, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Not a pleasant thought, I know. I used to do just fine before the vitalizer packs were on the market, but I, and my other three BSO members, find them very effective. What ever works. ESP

By the way, 1 Liter is kinda big (your link). The Vitalizer pack would dry out pretty quickly.

The Reed Vault is around 350 ml

We all did pretty well before anything came out - improvements just make things a little easier.

Good point. Smaller lunch boxes are even cheaper! :-)

And the vitaliser pack is the more important thing, I agree. Just wanted to add a related consumer alert.

David.

Think of it this way:

If they never sold, and Rico discontinued the vitalizer packs, saving a buck or two on the container would be a mute point.

And the smaller containers are much harder to find as they aren't a common size. They may have less material, but can be more expensive.

Well David I got a set of lunch boxes which looks just like the Vault and the smallest one is around 340ml(I can store about 25 reeds in it) and that set plus one pack of Vitalizer is just around the cost of the Vault if not a bit cheaper.l

There is an old rumour among clarinetist that Marcellus stored his reeds in his sneakers...hahah

Also that the teeth cushions Marcellus made for students were from the tub mat...

seriously though the Reed Vitalizer case is a nice case..having it broken may make it easier to get reeds out of anyways..mine broke too. After I threw it at a conductor..(joking)
