 Brahms symphony 4 music?
Author: Curinfinwe

Does anyone have the clarinet part for the slow movement to Brahms fourth symphony? It's an audition piece for a youth orchestra I'm auditioning for, and I can't find it online like I can find the other pieces. I believe it's written for A clarinet, so a B flat transposition, if you have it, would be most welcome.
Also, and hints about orchestral playing? I've never played clarinet in an orchestra before, so I'm entirely sure what they look for in auditions.
Thanks in advance.

Here's the score for the 2nd mvmt - hope this helps:

There's plenty in there to keep you busy!

For orchestral work you're gonna need an 'A'...

If you anticipate playing in future orchestras, purchasing some full orchestral parts might serve you well. Individual parts to the major symphonies are fairly easy to purchase from the different publishers.

Of course, there are numerous orchestral excerpt books which give you the important clarinet passages, but a more viable alternative would be to start collecting the Orchestral Musician CD-ROMs.

Volume III - "Brahms, Schumann and more" has the complete clarinet parts to 74 orchestral works. All clarinet parts (clarinet 1, clarinet 2, Eb, Bass, etc...) are contained for every piece.

Parts can be printed out, as needed ...GBK

In an orchestra, it is one on a part for winds and brass, unlike concert band where there are often a few on the same part. That means you can't rely on "the other guy" to fill in if you drop a note or two. This can be scary, but also rewarding when you have those wonderful moments where you can shine.

Hope your audition goes well.

Where could I get the CDs? And is it absolutely imperative to have an A for a provincial youth orchestra, or could I get away with transposing?

Years ago, I played in the Houston Youth Symphony and didn't have an A clarinet--I just transposed everything (which usually makes the parts harder to play, but if you don't own one, what else do you do?)

Now that I'm an adult and play in an adult symphony, I own an A. It makes life much easier.

BTW, there is one note on the A clarinet that you cannot transpose for the Bb--the lowest one (low E). If you must play that note (like in the solo in the 3rd mvt. of Respighi's Pines of Rome), you have to have an A clarinet.

Of course, if I end up playing in a symphony as an adult, I'll buy an A, but until I'm sure I can "make it," I'm not going to make that kind of investment. Also, my clarinet has a lovely dark tone, very A-clarinetish, so that helps. :)
