 Bonna clarinet case?
Author: doublertom
Date:   2008-11-01 14:28

Hello -

I'd like to hear from anyone that has a Bonna double clarinet case. Their web site doesn't offer much in the way of photos, description or measurements. I need a new double case because my FEL case is wearing out. Case covers have always annoyed me, so a traditional case may not be my choice, but I'm concerned that the BAM is too bulky.

Thanks.

Tom

I own the Bonna double case.
I really like it. It has some draw backs, but the fact that the keywork doesn't touch any surface is really nice. Just be prepared to use more cork grease, and not have THAT much space or accessories.
It's a good case!!

I own a double case and like it very much - it is small, lightweight, very sturdy, and well made - about half the size of the Pro Tec or Bam cases and half the weight. He makes mostly brass cases and few retailers have them in stock. He only makes the clarinet cases at certain times of the year and only a certain number so when they are gone they are gone. I put the plastic end caps from threaded cast iron pipes that are sold in the home center stores in the holes so that the cork grease would not stain the hole fabric and it also helps to keep the cork grease from wearing off in transit. They are a tad on the expensive side but IMO well worth the price.

Who stocks these cases?

Also- what are the outside dimensions?

Heres a pic posted on the Marcus Bonna website:

http://www.mbcases.com.br/produto.php?cod_cat=25&cod_prod=48&lang=eng

[couldn't located any dealers with cases in stock--probably a special order item]

BTW--I just sent an email to KBonna inquiring about a triple clarinet case as well as a low C bass clarinet case. I'll let you know when they reply--if ever.

I found a music retailer who carries the Bonna bassoon and horn cases. He informed me that there is typically a 3-6 month wait to order them. He is willing to stock them if people are interested. You can contact him at:

In 20 years of owning various cases, my Bonna case is *by far* the best case I have owned.
It is the best designed, smallest, sturdiest, lightest (aside from the Bam lite) and most comfortable case I have owned. And if that were not enough it is essentially a triple case.
If you take out 2 removable section dividers you can fit an Eb clarinet in the case. I do it all the time.
The outer pouch fits oversize music, flat stands, reeds and my 13-inch laptop and there is a further outer pouch for tools, etc.
And the case fits under an airplane seat so you can have it near you on flights.
I am going on tour with my contemporary group soon and I am playing Bb, A, Eb, bass, contrabass and tenor sax so having a small, light triple case like the Bonna is a godsend.

The bonna case is designed for efficiency and not as much for show. It's more practical, and thus some of the above use them for their practicality sense. This case reminds me of a camera bag: small, efficient, yet packed with enough room for your accessories.

The bam case, mixes show and ruggedness, taking into consideration the environmental changes with it's thick foam padding. (thus the goods inside experience a gradual change in temperature than thinner cases. It is definitely eyecatching with it's size and use of clips, rubber handles, and backpack straps.

Just received from Marcus:

Dear William,

Thank you for your e-mail
I'm sorry but I don't make these models of cases yet.

Regards,

Marcus Bonna

I replied suggesting their bassoon case might be easily redesigned into a lightweight low C five piece bass clarinet case. I also am still "bugging" the Reunion Blues folks to include a bass clarinet gig bag in the product line. They say, "Maybe next year"--we'll see..........

How about this for an ad slogan,
" When you really have to perform, you need a Bonna"

Ok at least I didn't mention Morales or Drucker.

Tom, I don't think that Morales's performance needs any help--maybe Druckers.............

Just received from Marcus Bonna:

"Dear William,

I understand all your explanation. I know that I need to make a bass clarinet case. The problem is that I can't make it right now.
Perhaps, next year.

Thank you for understanding,

Marcus Bonna"

Still waiting to hear from the Reunion Blues folk's regarding their plans for clarinet gig bags. Guess we will just have to settle for the "same-old, same-old", [bulky] Bam, [no five-piece bass clarinet case] Pro-Tech, [super expensive] Wiseman, [heavy, clunky] stock Selmer, Yamaha, Buffet & Leblanc--unless more of us speak up and ask MB & RB to "get with it" and include us in their very excellant product model lines. (to paraphrase) The squeaky *clarinets* may eventually get a better choice of *grease*. Speak up if better carry cases matter...........

The Low Brass Project lists a double starting at $420 for nylon/cordura or $550 for leather.

$379 or $420. man that is still uber pricy for a case. $420 could buy a top notch mouthpiece and a cheap (yet effective) double case. if you are really worried about your instruments, buy a pelican case.

How does the insulation compare to that of the BAM double? Is it enough for extreme weather changes?

I know this thread is about the Bonna case, but I have to bring up another option for a double clarinet case in the same price range for you to check out.

I've just purchased a BAM High Tech Traveler Double Case and am very impressed! In addition to holding the two clarinets, it has room for four barrels and two mouthpieces. The external pockets have plenty of room for accessories (this compartment is actually expandable), sheet music, laptop (unless you have a large screen laptop-over 15 inches), etc. It also has backpack straps. It's also very lightweight and would fit under an airplane seat.

http://www.bamcases.com/new/english/wind/clarinet.php?recordID=41

It's not brown as the photos would imply, but grey and black.

One of my friends has the Marcus Bonna double case, and he really likes it! I think you'd be happy with either one!

I was the one that introduced these cases to Omar at the OU sum.(hi by the way!). I had a bassoonist friend who had one and I was interested. Are they expensive? YES. Are they worth it? YES. My horns were in the trunk of my car when I was side swiped by another driver and my instruments were unharmed. As for storage, anyone who needs more room has too much stuff ;-). This case carries everything I need plus extras. The only thing it won't do is carry music in a leather folder. Plus the cover is removable if it gets worn. This is the only case I will ever have for my clarinet!!!!!!!!

I do not work for them but I know that dillons has them in stock.

They are the one of the #1 go to places for brass so they have a good connection with Bona.

I know they have a red one in stock and just sold a black one.

give them a call.

I just got my case today! Looks awesome, but I have no clue how you would fit an Eb clarinet in the bottom section. If someone could show me a picture with the Eb in there, I'd be so grateful.

I also noticed that the bell on the right presses down my left C key on the A clarinet. Is that normal/OK for the bell and the keywork?

"I have no clue how you would fit an Eb clarinet in the bottom section. If someone could show me a picture with the Eb in there, I'd be so grateful."

I was heading out to an orchestra rehearsal last night and I remembered that someone asked for a photo of the Bonna double case holding three instruments.
Not only does this case hold 3 instruments, but it can fit 4 instruments, in this case A, Bb, Eb and D.
In the picture you cannot see the D clarinet. It is under the bubble wrap that separates it from the Eb clarinet. The Eb's bell is inside the A clarinet's bell and the D's bell is in the outside pouch.
I transport my C clarinet in the same section in which you see the Eb clarinet in the photo.

Your testimony for Bonna's case has been more than enough for me. I'm making the switch as soon as I can!

>I have two of them!

I got a second Bonna case, in this case for my period clarinets because the moulded inserts that hold the various pieces (bells, upper and lower joints, etc) are held securely in place with a strong velcro. One can reposition the tenon holders to hold clarinets with non-traditional joint lengths (like classical-era clarinets).

It is looking like they are very hard to come by... and I want one in the blue nylon. Simon described a thread of mine a year or so ago how he fits a macbook air in larger pocket. This sounds ideal for me. Simon, be prepared to be copied!
