 NY Counterpoint clarinet choir arrangement?
Author: Simon Aldrich
Date:   2008-09-13 17:28

Does anyone know if Steve Reich's New York Counterpoint exists in an arrangement for *full* clarinet choir (including alto clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, contrabass clarinet).
My searching has turned up only the clarinet ensemble arrangement (for solo clarinet with ensemble of 7 clarinets and 3 bass clarinets) for rental from B&H.

Thanks,

I haven't seen one, and please excuse me for going off track slightly...

It wouldn't be hard to create. The original score that you've already found could be doctored (some might say butchered) with some transposition but I have to ask what's the point?

Surely everyone in a clarinet choir can play Bb and/or bass? Doubling up parts (if you must) seems to me to be a better idea to me.

I prefer the piece with tape in the first place. An ensemble performance always seems to be lacking the perfect unity which can be created if a recording is created with care.

Off track even further: for a piece inspired by New York Counterpoint which already has contra and altos in it - see Gavin Bryars' Three Elegies. This always seems to work better to me as an ensemble piece while also working as a multi-tracked project.

I also have a question about this piece...

When recording the 10 parts, does one use the score? or have you rented the parts from Boosey and Hawkes?

Hi Neal, I used the score and a page turner. The score comes with the solo clarinet part on its own for the performance.

Thats what I was thinking. I am going to take the score over to Kinkos and have them put a spiral binding on it for easy turning.

Thanks!

Daniel - Thanks for the response.

This year there are 17 people in McGill's clarinet choir, with keeners on contra-alto and contrabass and with all of McGill's 3 bass clarinets already being used in this ensemble.
In trying to include everyone on his or her instrument (including alto and Eb)
I am wondering if certain parts in the original instrumentation could simply be transposed to contrabass, conta-alto, alto and Eb.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into this piece.

Simon,
There is an arrangement out there but I don't think it's legal. It calls for 8 clarinet parts (bass clarinet doubles clr on one part), alto, bass, contra-alto and contra-bass parts.
I believe we'd have to make sure all the copyright stuff was taken care of first.

So Danny Boy, which supplier had the page turner in stock? [happy]

Ha Brenda - I think it was a case of running round college late at night (only time the studio was ever free of course...) and looking for some scared little first year!

Hello Sarah

Thank-you for your reply. I *knew* someone must have arranged NY Counterpoint for clarinet choir!

>We had two undergrads at CCM who arranged it for clarinet choir and we >actually performed it at OMEA last spring. I can ask them about the >arrangement. It does call for 8 clarinet parts (bass clarinet doubles clr on one
>part), alto, bass, contra-alto and contra-bass parts.
>I believe we still have copies of the score and a full set of parts. I'm sure we'd
>have to make sure all the copyright stuff was taken care of first (I think it >already may have).
>If you have any more questions, let me know and I'll find out as much as I can >for you!

I can get the original score but if there was a way to get the arranged Clarinet Choir parts your friends made that would be wonderful. Whatever is easier - scanning and emailing them or photocopying and sending them. I will, of course, cover all costs.
Perhaps we should take this conversation offlist, so that it doesn't become a copyright-violation discussion (as legitimate as that conversation would be).
One of my email addresses (the one that gets all the spam, therefore I can give it out) is simona@cam.org

Thanks in advance,
Simon
