Old Geezer-
It's very impressive for a 12 year-old.
An aside- Where did you get the idea that Buffet Festivals are a rarity? Do you know something I don't? A colleague of mine just bought a pair and sounds terrific on them.

But I still think Julian Bliss is really awesome, and was better than Han Kim at the age of 12.

There's no question that at age 12 Han Kim takes more musical risks than Jullian did at the same age. If I were evaluating him like a player in the NBA draft, I'd be much more excited about his upside.

He's astonishing now, it's awesome to imagine what he will be 10 years from now. I don't hear much about Buffet Festivals but I guess thay're still bought and sold. Does any one know something good about them?
Han Kim's handlers seem to favor them.

Han Kim seem to have grown about a foot in the last year and loosened up a bit. His teacher says he only practices about 3 hours a day!
More likely that's just his warm up routine. One of Stanley Hasty's students used to practice 7 hours a day! Stanley advised her to cut down 2 hours.

There are so many excellent young musicians these days that some of you may find interesting an article by Howard Reich in the Sunday March 30 issue of the Chicago Tribune. The article is about Rachel Barton-Pine , violinist, who suffered a horrible accident 13 years ago at age 20 and is still struggling with her comeback. It is quite well written and inspirational. Google works.

Very good, i'd like to hear him play the JeanJean Carnival of Venice, it's alot harder than the one he's playing in his youtube vid.

I'm a little more than 10 years older than this kid, and I'm scared, even with over 10 years head start! He's the first 'child prodigy' I've heard who actually has a decent sound with lots of potential for improvement. I wasn't crazy about Julian Bliss early on (things are different now!) and I hope this guy continues to improve, he could be spectacular and dare I say, better than Julian Bliss someday?

Buffet Festivals are still sold. They are very good, easy responding instruments. The intonation is quite good except for the lowest few notes which are flat, as usual.

Han Kim has his own Youtube channel with 9 videos of standard clarinet concert pieces...listen and believe if you can. He is astounding. Young violin prodigies abound; but wind players?

One can only hope he is handled right and is able to develop into the historic peformer he seems destined for!

His Youtube channel is:

I agree with the majority here when i am saying that Han Kim is really great, even better than Bliss in many areas. Kim makes the music hear interresting, and you hear that he has a teacher who let's him develop in his "own path", while bliss is, and will always be, a prodigy of his teacher, Sabine Meyer. That is my opinion.

But they are astoundingly good both of them:)

Oh, I think Mr. Bliss was a prodigy before he ever started playing with Sabine.
I attended a performance by him before he even went to I.U. and he was great even then. However, Grieg was great too.

'and you hear that he has a teacher who let's him develop in his "own path", while bliss is, and will always be, a prodigy of his teacher, Sabine Meyer. That is my opinion.'

And you see, here's the problem, one hears what one is expecting really. As Bob has said, Julian was a fantastic player before he went anywhere near Sabine Meyer.

Paul Harris, Howard Klug, Andrew Marriner and no doubt many other have all taught Julian - does he sound like all of them and do they all sound like each other?

I was lucky to be at a masterclass that Julian played at with Howard Klug (the first time they each other in fact, so Julian was probably about the same age as this fellow) and was far more impressed then then I am watching this You Tube video. 'Takes more musical risks' how exactly? I realise that all of this is completely subjective anyway.

Why does there always have to be someone better, why can't people be appreciated for what they are...individuals.

Han will be playing 2 pieces in recital at the 2008 Tokyo Clarinet Festival in August

http://2008.jp-clarinet.org/2008English/player.htm

along with Jon Manasse, Sylvie Hue, Bil Jackson, and Jan Bokun.

Some great exposure there!

He's playing Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock tonight at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall with a famous Korean Soprano , so wonder if it will be on Youtube soon.

I have to agree with Danny Boy on that point. Who cares if this kid is hotter for his age than Bliss? But boy, is he good!

He also has a nice version of Immer Kleiner, far superior to any other version I've seen or heard:

What a shot in the arm for the instrument!
