Sitting here this afternoon listening to a recording of the Dvorak 8th, Sir Collin Davis and the LSO from 2000. I've had it for some time and listened to it quite often, but I never noticed until now, what sounds like humming, particularly in the 2nd movement. Are my ears playing tricks on me or is that really Davis adding his own interpretation?

The all-time grunt master is Pablo Casals. Any live recording will give you endless entertainment not only of superlative music-making, but plenty of moans to go around.

Actually, it may not be anyone humming at all. With many digital recordings (especially the earlier ones) there is an artifact of the recording process known as 'aliasing' which results when the sampling rate (generally 44kHz, I think) is too low compared to the higher overtones of the instruments being recorded --- I'm not well-versed in signal processing so can't describe it any better, but the audible result is what's called 'breathing' noise -- it sounds very much like moaning or humming, and most often is heard during passages with a lot of upper strings (violins and violas) playing at louder volumes. I have many recordings where these sounds are quite annoying!

Brian, Colin does that alot. He likes to sing along. I have a recording of the LSO with him conducting Sibelius 1st Symphony and in the last movt he is singing along in some of the tutti passages quite noticably. It doesn't bother me. I also like the fact that Glen Gould sings along in his both versions of Bach's Goldberg variations. In fact i've done it in the orchestra!!

I recently purchased a CD of my favorite jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson. An old live recording at the London House in Chicago ("The Sound of the Trio"). Oscar vocalizes loudly as he improvises. It's great stuff though, although the piano is pretty bad......
