How long did people around here have to wait before they could effectively play clarinet after they got their wisdom teeth taken out? I'm getting mine taken out tomorrow and I'm really not looking forward to being unable to play.

I had one removed and it wasn't impacted. I was on motrin for a few days and played as soon as the bleeding stoped, about two days.

Not to scare you, but I know of some instances where it took several weeks...depends on the teeth and the dentist('s wisdom...haha:)
How do you know when it's time to take them out? Mine are lurking down there, reminding me that they exist from time to time. Jaw surgery..

Hi there
I've heard stories of people being paralyzed in the jaw/mouth region after the surgery. It happens to a lot of people and is only temporary, but for some it becomes permanent. I don't mean to scare anyone but I think it's worth talking to the dentist and mentioning how important your mouth is to your career...
I haven't had mine out... and I don't want to... though I think it is near in my future.

Every case could be different, depending on what needs to be done. Why don't you ask your oral surgeon and follow her advice?
I had some oral surgery last week (but not wisdom tooth extraction) and the endodontist told me I should not play for two weeks. On the bright side, I get to eat a lot of ice cream :-)

In my sophomore year as a performance major I had all four taken out at once - two were impacted and two had broken through but had caused cheek ulcerations after a week long Carmen performance. The first week, in no way could I or was I told I could play. My lower face was visibly swollen. Luckily this all happened over spring break, so I wasn't forced to play in any capacity.
The following week I did return to school and I was well healed, though told not to resume playing until midweek. The next weekend began Operafest rehearsal but I had no stamina in my chops. It took another week until I could play almost normally.
Overall - 1 1/2 weeks until I could play but really 3 weeks until I had the full strenght back in my embouchure. If you are young and follow your surgeons directions, you should heal well. Just don't play too much too soon!

got all four wisdom teeth ALL were impacted. Took 3 weeks to a month before i could play again with no discomfort. It took me a while after that to really get back into the groove.

I had my lower two wisdom teeth taken out. Took about two weeks before I could play again.

If it is not quite healed don't take the risk and play. It will take much longer to heal if the wound bursts open midway through healing.
I ate lots of fruit smoothies (homemade so no chemicals) and ice cream when I had mine out.
