 OU Symposium 2007
Author: Clarinetgirl06

So, I'm going to be going to the OU Symposium for my 3rd year. I'm very excited and will be playing in a masterclass for my first time.

I do have a rather big complaint though. The OU Sooner Hotel is listed as a special rate hotel (I stayed at it last year and it was nice), but we called to make a reservation this year and told us they "forgot" about the Symposium and booked all the rooms. None of the rooms will be open until Friday the 15th. So, I'm just warning everyone about this inconvenience. I wish they would use the dorms again like they did 2 years ago. It was very cheap and a nice distance from the Symposium.

Anyone here going this year?

The Sooner Hotel booked up is a tad of an inconvenience but several vendors will be there which will miss ClarinetFest because of the time crunch between the two. Attendence because of the international ClarinetFest should be good too. OU is possibly my favorite show of the year because of the relaxed atmosphere and approachability of the "name" talent that is always there as well as a chance to reconnect with old friends that a busy ClarinetFest often hinders.

Speaking of vendors, who will be there?

Well of course only the symposium director knows all the merry band of vendors that will be present - you could contact David Etheridge at OU -but I know that there will be at least 4 of the most renowned custom mouthpiece makers, all of the big 3 or 4 clarinet manufacturers with hand picked instruments, usually the top several mail order supplies and accessories sellers, a couple large sheet music sellers, and a sprinkling of the odd and unusual sellers with new and different items to pique our G.A.S.

Hello,

I'll be at OU. I'm playing a recital (jazz) on Friday and playing the Poulenc duo with my former teacher (Steve Cohen) on his recital on Thursday. I hope to meet bulletin boarders again this year. Please do find me and say hello!

Speaking of the International convention, I'm quite disappointed that this year and next falls on or very near the 4th of July. This makes it impossible for US military members to attend. Maybe if this annoys you too, more complaints will make it not happen again in the future.

I may get a better response from attending the symposium as I have had NO answer to my email from a certain mouthpiece maker regarding mouthpieces. It will be nice to try mouthpieces since I think mine is warping. I was really interested in buying. I'll be sure to say hello. I'm sure everyone is very busy preparing for the symposium.

i certainly wish i lived only 160km away. For three years in a row i went to the OU symposium and heard EVERY CONCERT, it was an amazing experience. In 2005 i attended as a performer, and on the last night stayed up all night walking around the campus talking to an old flame who then came to visit me in NZ...
yep, the OU Symposium and that Norman campus hold a lot of great memories for me!

I know that Redwine, Lomax, and Grabner will be at OU. Brad Behn will not be there - too close to ClarinetFest. There maybe a couple other mouthpiece makers there too, but more than enough talent in the mouthpiece world to keep anyone occuppied trying out candidates for the entire show.

I will definately be at the U. of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium. I have thoroughly enjoyed the symposium every year I have been there (four of five times, I can't be sure anymore).

To help out with publicity, I volunteered my services as a webmaster. If you want more information about who the soloists and clinicians are, go to:

www.ouclarinetsymposium.org

I hope to see many of you there. Please stop by and say hello. I love to put a face with the bames of so many people who have contributed so much on this BB and the klarinet list.

P.S. Also stop at Omar's table, his company make GREAT inexpensive C clarinets!

Great memories there. The last time I went was around 1993 and I played in a masterclass for Elsa Verdehr. I learned so much in just a few minutes with her. Also that year Ricardo Morales, Verdehr, Mazzeo and many others played. It's so easy to make friends when you all love the clarinet.

From my last experience it was so loud in the vendor area to actually hear the nuances of the differenct mouthpieces. I wish there were quieter place to try out a mouthpiece.

David Etheridge or his show administrator has made practice rooms available to people at the show in the Catlett Center in the past to try out instruments and gear. There are also adjacent rooms to the vendors area that some people use to try out instruments and mouthpieces.

last time i was at a clari-conference/fest etc i deliberately avoided the exhibit room as the awful noise hurt my ears. Now, after trying to buy barrels/mouthpieces etc via international mail, i realise that despite the noise it's still an opportunity to be taken advantage of (both in terms of the variety of products and the possitility to select from among a large number of the same product)

Hi Mark C - I fondly remember our "meet" at Coach's, downtown Norman, met and talked with many cl f[r]iends. Is there a possibility of this again? Don

I don't get to go this year : ( but am looking forward to going next year. My son's girlfriend is in the Miss Missouri pageant the following weekend so we're going to go be supportive. Doing both is too much travel for me.

You'll all see Dr. Jim Gai and his group perform at OU this year. He's the clarinet professor at UCM here in Missouri. Dr. Russell Coleman (in that same group) is my past cl. professor from UCM (CMSU when I graduated). I don't know when they're performing but look for them. Jim has a couple of groups and one of them is called "Roadkill Quartet" That may be the one that's performing.

I had a blast last year and ended up with my new Buffet Festival A and Bb clarinets. I met so many wonderful people. Walt Grabner helped me select and sold me my clarinets and a Grabner mouthpiece. Hi Walt! Everythings working out great.

The personal attention you get there is just amazing. I was like a kid in a candy store. I met several of the performers at the hotel we stayed at and had breakfast with them. You're right, Omar, people are so relaxed and very approachable.

I live in KC and I understand the ICS convention will be here next summer. Carrie and I both live here so we'll have to set up a time to meet the BB'ers that are coming.

Ya'll have fun in Norman! Rebecca

Unfortunately I can only make one convention a year (if that!) and I'll be heading out to Vancouver this year.

I'm going this year. It should be pretty amazing. I'm sure many people are already in Norman.
Is anyone playing in the clarinet choir?

Clarinetgirl06, last year you did a great report on the OU Symposium with lots of photos and remarks etc.

Hope you can do so again this year for all of us stay at home types.

Good luck with your masterclass!
