 Minnesota Bass Clarinet audition
Author: shmeon

I recently returned from the Minnesota Orchestra bass clarinet audition. I felt I played really well in the prelims but I did not advance. Does anyone know who the finalists are or who won the job?

On the MyAuditions thread:

Winner: Timothy Zavadil from Louisville

Sam Bergman, a violist with Minnesota posts on that board, but has not confirmed the info.

Tim is listed on the Louisville Symphony as being the Assistant Principal / E Flat..........not bass clarinet.

Bass clarinetist is listed as Ernest Gross.

So.........here comes the dominos game of musical chairs

Also, David Pharris was finally hired as the permanent 2nd clarinetist. He has been with the orchestra for the past two seasons.

There was no 2nd clarinet audition. Pharris was appointed.

"There was no 2nd clarinet audition. Pharris was appointed."

LOL--same way I got the job in my orchestra. Helps being in the right place at the right time (expecially if you suck at auditions like I do)

Tim is a friend of mine who went to DePaul and later Northwestern. He studied with Lawrie Bloom and later played bass in Toledo. For the past few years he has been in Louisville. FWIW, Tim was one of the players in my round at the recent Cincinnati audition who also did not advance...

Tim is a fantastic clarinet player and one of the nicest guys I have ever met.

Tim is a fine bass clarinet player. He has been to my workshop/studio several times. Even though he played Eb in Louisville, he has plenty of chops on the bass clarinet.

He is also a very nice guy, and I am very happy for him.
