 Reestablishing Gold Clarinet Logos
Author: Fred

I have several clarinets on which I would like to recolor the now-faded manufacturers' logos. I have the gold crayons made for this purpose, but I find the results generally undesirable. It is difficult to get small areas filled in, and the surrounding grain also tends to pick up more crayon color than I desire. The problem is of course even worse if the stamp in the wood is not bold and distinct. Is there a better way of achieving the gold coloring I desire? I know there must be, as I've seen some work that was so good I just don't believe it could have come from the crayons. If you know of the better technique, could you please direct me to a source for the required materials? Many thanks!

Vytas Krass does alot of that kind of work. He doesn't use crayons so I suggest you ask him about the logo recoloring

Good information - Sorry for the redundant question, but my Search did not turn up that great thread. The thread GBK referenced within that thread appears to no longer be available. I'll try - logos gilding - and see what else I can find.

don't bother with Vytas, he only does that as part of his high end overhaul for $450

A golden logo on a beaten-up horn just looks cheesy. I'm not into making new gear look "vintage" (with fake patina and all), but a well-used instrument just looks, well, used.
Side question: how many violinists do get their Stradivaris re-lacquered?

Thanks, Mark . . . that thread was very helpful.

So for the folks that have tried the crayon as directed and the gilt cream, can anyone suggest which gives the more original appearance?

BTW, I'm sorry I forgot about the "Keepers" Forum. It was a wonderful idea to start that.
