Excerpt book by McGinnis - Any good?
Author: Caco185

I was recently searching JW Pepper, and came across an orchestral excerpt book arranged by McGinnis and published by International Music Co. It comes in two volumes. I have never heard of the book myself, and I was just wondering if anyone uses this book? Does anyone have a good or bad review of the book? It sounds pretty great to me.

[ Snipped - These are the first 2 volumes of 8. Volumes 1-4 are edited by McGinnis and Volumes 5- 8 by Drucker. The contents do not need to be listed - GBK ]

I appreciate any input!!

Beware - The International series (McGinnis/Drucker) have numerous misprints and typos.

A better choice would be to use the CD-ROM collection "The Orchestral Musician's CD-ROM Library", as it contains complete original parts...GBK

Nearly everyone has studied the McGinnis books, but they have only very short passages (at least in the first 4 volumes, which are the only legal ones) and many errors. See:
http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i181604&t=181601
http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=83907&t=83841

They've been pretty much superseded by the Orchestral Musician's CD-ROM Library CDs, available from Gary Van Cott http://www.vcisinc.com/. It's essential to learn orchestral solos in context, which the McGinnis books don't give. See my rant at http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=20&i=768&t=768.

Also, audition committees know about the errors and omissions and listen for them as a sign you know only the excerpt and not the entire work. http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=2618&t=2564.

If you are undertaking the study of orchestral excerpts and want to purchase a book, instead to the CD-ROMs, I would start with Peter Hadcock's and then get the 3 Kalmen Bloch books. Both have interpretive commentary as well as fingering advice.

Although these do not have ALL the major works asked for on auditions, they are an excellent start...GBK
