 New San Francisco Prinicpal

It is official, Carey Bell is the new principal clarinetist of the San Francisco Symphony. I am assuming he would take the position right away, but I have no information to the back that up.

Baez is still there?

Baez is the associate/e flat and did not make the final cut for the principal spot.

Carey Bell will be taking over David Breeden's position. Luis Baez was appointed acting principal between David Breeden's death and the appointment of Carey Bell. David Neuman the second clarinetist became the acting associate principal, and Jerome Simas became an acting member of the orchestra. Quite confusing with all the acting/associate titles, but that's the story.

Carey Bell (correct me if I'm wrong) has a year or two with the orchestra before he becomes a full member ie. he is given tenure. To my knowledge most audition winners play with the orchestra for a year before they are either granted tenure or asked to leave. However, somewhere I think is says they have up to two years before a decision must be made.

Yes that is correct. And in the past, MTT makes people reauditon and from what I hear it is very hard to get tenure. This happened to a horn player. Ben Friemith won the Bass clarinet audition a couple of years ago and his wife won principal horn ( it think it was principal). After a year Ben kept the job and his wife did not keep hers. She now plays in the San Francisco Opera orchestra. Everyone loved her playig in the orhestra but MTT did not and so she is out.

Liz Freimuth is in her first year as principal horn of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. So far, she's done an outstanding job.

I have heard he is especially picky with the horns based on the fact that he has been auditioning horns for years now, and no one has satisfied his taste.

MTT likes players who really go for it. This is right up some people's alley, and overdone to others. He told a woman who was on trial for a cello spot that he didn't think she was playing "chancy" enough, because she "didn't play in any rests" during her week with orchestra. Carey Bell is an amazing player and probably the ideal between refined and ballsy.

MTT said someone was unlikely because they didn't "play in any rests"?

What does that mean?

What ever happened to the good old days when your father or your uncle or your brother etc. could get you on the payroll and nobody complained?
